I could look it up but u-all are so helpful I might just ask and take your word for it.
Is there a maximum number of matches a wrestler can compete in during one highschool season.
Is this number the same for private highschool as it is for public schools in which the private school is competing under the same KSHCAA organization?

NO!! However, there is a limit on competition points where each wrestler only gets 30 points per season.
1 Dual 2 Double Dual 3 Quad or 1 Day Tournament 4 Two Day Tournament

If this be true sounds like the guys are getting cheated out of half a season. There are enough points left to have a High school Freestyle/Greco season.

72 maybe, but here's a guy who has 50 matches in a 30 point schedule:
vs SFT (1point) 1-0 Atchison Duals (3 points) 4-1 Eudora Tournamnet (4points) 7-1 Emporia Tournament (3 points) 3-2 Bonner Tournament (3 points) 2-2 Basehor Tournament (4 points) 2-2 Paola Tournament (3 points) 3-2 vs Anderson Co & DeSoto (2 points) 2-0 Concordia Tournament (4 points) 7-1 League (3 points) 3-1
Regionals 4-1
Current Record: 37-13

You'll have to explain about having a FS/GR season, but it would make sense to have more dual tourneys for more matches. Wrestlers in other states are able to get 50-60+ matches in a season and it doesn't kill them.

Here is one scenerio
If you went to 7, 2day tournmants you would have used 28 pts. If these were 16 man brackets and your kid wrestled the max of 6 matches in each tournament, he would have 42 matches. You would then have 2 competition pts left for a double dual (or 2 singles) and could end the season with 44 matches.
Twist. If your wrestler wrestled all 6 matches at each tournament, but also wrestled in a pig tail in each one her would end the season with 51 matches.

Wrestlers can only wrestle 5 matches a day and could go to dual tourney and wrestle 10 matches in two days.

According to my math, 72 seems high but that would be right.
There is not a limit put on the number of matches a wrestler can have. As Travius said, the limitation is based on a limit of 30 competition points. Those points follow the formula he provided.
If a school competed in seven 2-day dual tournaments and have 28 competition points. The highest number of matches one wrestler would have in one tournament is 10.
The school could have one double dual for 2 more points and 2 more matches.
I guess that adds up to 72!
Traditionally in Kansas I have seen numbers approaching 50 but can't recall a time I have seen 70!

Or try this
7 two day round-robins (or dual) tournmants. 28 points
You could have 11 teams and wrestle 5 matches on Fri and 5 on sat for a total of 10 matches that weekend. This would put you and 70 matches with 2 pts left over for duals and you would then finish the season with 72 matches.
That is alot of matches. I thought some of my kids with 40 had seen alot of mat time.

Most schools have a league schedule for duals and tourney that would not allow a school to go strictly dual team tourneys.

I would love to see someone wrestle 72 matches in a season. There are some that get very close in Michigan.

You could get over 80 matches with regionals and state.
There was a NCAA finalist last year with over 250 wins in high school. Something like 254-0. It may have been Schlatter.

No it doesnt. It says that your 30 pts count only in regular season and not in the state tournament or state qualifing events.

regionals counts toward the 30 competition points The State Tournament Series (regionals and state) does not count in the 30 competition points.
