Well just for the sake of fun, lets do another poll. Keep in mind that this poll is not scientific by any means. The results of which can be skewed by those that really don't care/ have an opinion on the topic.
But the question at hand is of course. Should 9th graders be allowed to compete at the USAW kids state tournament series. Keep in mind that these kids are in a grade higher simply because their birthdate occurs earlier in the year than the state school cutoff, or their parents choose to enter them in school a year earlier.
Have fun with this one.

I would like to see an 18 and under section or a 15 to 18 section so we could have a grand state. Because of mat space this might lengthen the State Tourney to three days. We could have weigh in two different days for everyone. That eliminate the big weight cutters and allow us to see some really great matches.

THE Tiger,
The real question is should 7th and 8th graders have to wrestle high school kids in the USAW Kansas State Series. Lets be honest here, no one has stated that High School kids should not be allowed into the series but seperated from non-high school kids.

I would like the other option, not if they should, but should there be a HS only division that does not include 8th graders. That seems to be the topic of debate to me, not excluding them all together.

I am not going to vote on this either because I also think this is the incorrect question. I agree with Mike Furches and Will Cokeley as to what the correct question for the poll should be.
Mike, why don't you start a poll with that question instead of this one.
TheTiger, Why didn't you also remind everyone in your topic introduction to also keep in mind that the 9th graders get to practice 5 days a week and compete in meets thru the year against sophomores, juniors and seniors which could give them an advantage in their preparation compared to the 8th graders and some 7th graders who primarily only practice twice a week and compete in meets against other grade school wreestlers thru their season?

This weekend I saw younger (maybe 19) against older (maybe 26) college wrestlers. I've also seen a preseason Kansas HS freshman (13) go out of state against HS seniors (18) in Oklahoma...but he welcomed the challenge, to face his fears.
Why don't we ask if colleges could make age limits as well? Or maybe even age limits for HS Freshman and Sophomores in Kansas?

Why don't we ask if colleges could make age limits as well? Or maybe even age limits for HS Freshman and Sophomores in Kansas? College wrestlers compete, practice and train in the College division. How is that the same as High School wrestlers vs. Kids division wrestlers? Are college wrestlers allowed to wrestle at High School State?

The question as I understand it form the other thread, "Is it 'fair' for middle school wrestlers to wrestle high school kids in USAW Kansas Folk style?"
My two cents: Yes, as long as they wrestle in the established age groups set by USAW Kansas Kids. Yes there are exceptional cases where a 7th grade 13 year old could wrestle a 15 year old Sophomore, this is rare. The common case is 13-14 year old 8th Graders wreslting 14-15 year old freshman.
Had two 13 year old 8th grade boys that did just fine against 14-15 year old high school kids. Did they take some lumps (yes), did the give some out (yes). Their 8th grade year in USAW Kansas Folk style was a good transition experience for Cadet Freestyle in the summer and high-school wrestling in the fall.
Mike Flynn
P.S. On the college side: My older son Sean (18 yr freshman) did get the oppoutnity to battle it out with a couple of 23 year old 5th year Seniors. He never said it was "unfair", but he did say it "sucked". LOL

.......how about the HS SOPHMORE face his fears against peers of his own age
Bad argument, they are in the same age group.
but he and other HS wrestlers probably should face their fears and wrestle in their own brackets.
These are the only brackets available. Don't get mad at the kids change the system if you do not like it. Let's also not forget...are you ready for this...8th graders that were held back or red shirted. Yes they may not be practicing with high schoolers (some of them will be) but physically they are more mature. I've seen some pretty immature sophmores that take a beatin physically from mature 8th graders.
I was posting at the same time as Mr. Flynn, I agree whole heartedly with what he had to say.

Please consider that in our school most, if not all, high school freshman are just 1st year wrestlers. If they wrestle Kids, they are usually up against 8th graders, many of whom have wrestled for many years. In these cases, I believe the advantage goes to the 8th graders.

You know LL,
That is a good point for the side that doesn't have many positives. Wouldn't you know that a SME Lancer would come up with a good post for the other side.
Nice job...

First of all congratulations to all the 7th and 8th graders that competed at 14U and qualified for state. This is not really an issue of age or grade but level of competition. This age group includes kids club competitors, high school state placers, and every level in between. I agree it does give the 7th, 8th, and first year freshmen a step up in competition as my son has greatly improved having wrestled high school qualifiers and state placers the last two years. Each wrestler has a pretty good feeling as to what level of a wrestler they are and whether they choose to challenge themselves or not is up to them.

In our experience, having to wrestle high school age kids as an 8th grader during sub-district and district kids did a great job of preparing our oldest son for his high school career. He was better prepared for the level of competition he would be facing as well as better prepared to go against the seniors as a freshman.

Goes to show some wrestlers prefer to improve themselves rather than their trophy shelves.

What about the 1st time 10 year old wrestling a 10 year old that has been wrestling (placing) since he was 6 years old?
Or a 1st time 12 year old wrestling a 10 year old that has been wrestling (placing) since he was 6 years old?
It's going to happen.
