To all of those in the Wichita area, have you been wondering what I have been up to? I would love to invite you to a chance to find out this Sunday as I will be speaking and presenting my Faith In Film Discovering Faith Through Culture presentation. I will be giving this presentation on Sunday Morning, Sept 2, 10:00 AM at Mosaic Church, which meets at Truesdale Elementary in South West Wichita. The address of the church, near Pawnee and Meridian is 2464 S. Glenn.
Now to answer a few questions.
Is this a church service? Yes but albeit a different church service from a church attempting to be a different kind of church for those who have given up on church. There will however be a brief worship time, and then a time where I will give my presentation.
Do I need to dress up? Only in what you would normally wear. One of the beautiful things about Mosaic is that it is a come as you are church.
Is it appropriate for children? The truth to that question is it depends. If you are really religious, there may be some things in the presentation that you, and or small children take offense at. Mosaic offers a children’s service for small children and this is available for you.
What can I expect? The presentation is really a challenging message that uses a lot of movie clips, from various films. In fact, most of the presentation is movie clips centered on spiritual truth, many of them using Biblical concepts to get you to think, ranging from how we as followers of Jesus communicate with others, to listening to the hard questions of people who ask them, even people we disagree with. It also takes a serious, yet, honest look at how the non religious often times sees those in the Church and those who call themselves Christian. Following the Biblical guidelines of teaching and educating, this does attempt to teach and educate people how to better live their lives and be more like Jesus. Not more religious, but again, more like Jesus.
Is this a large church? No, actually a pretty small start up. If living in the Wichita area you have likely seen the signs around town, and the article in the Newspaper last week.
Is this going to be boring? I don’t think so, it will be controversial at points, challenging at others, and all educational and thought provoking if you take seriously the presentation. Of course it will also be fun. There will be refreshments and pop-corn for all of those who want to enjoy the full thrust of the presentation.
Will this be a short service? Hate to say it, but no, expect the presentation to last a little over one hour. We will be out and done before noon. But…, I guarantee you that hour plus will go by fast and will be a lot of fun. There is always laughter, someone getting a little upset because I present a challenge to Christians to listen to even those they don’t like when they are asking questions, and always people who get a lot out of it and go on to take the message to the place where they have a dramatic impact on living a more spiritual, fun, effective life.
There are other questions folks may ask, and that is okay, just email me to let me know. For those that are also interested, and please do let me know this, we are having a faith in film night at the house on Saturday evening at 6:00 PM titled The Gospel and Steven King. We will be watching the Steven King Movie Desperation and I promise you, for those critical of horror, and Steven King in particular, you may be shocked at the spiritual significance of this movie and much of his work. We expect that to be over by 9:00 PM on Saturday evening. Believe me; we want to catch part of the Tennessee California football game and some of the Auburn K-State Game. Now a reminder on this one, while the film is only rated pg-13, it does include some graphic images of horror; it isn’t for the little kiddies in other words.
That is about it for now, would love to show you in part what God is doing with the ministry of The Virtual Pew and hopefully over the next months will have other opportunities in the Wichita area as that is where I am trying to book most of my dates between now and then. A little satisfaction in knowing that for those that are or have been critical in the past, a reminder from Larry Norman. “I’ve been put down, talked about, and people scandalize my name, but here I am talking about Jesus just the same!”
I would really love to see some of the old United at the Cross family, and many of those in the Wrestling Community and a large number of other friends and family from Kansas and the surrounding Wichita area. Meeting at Truesdale for this service, in the old neighborhood could be a wonderful reminder of God’s goodness in serving the people he wants to serve. You can read into that thought all you want to. Would also be great for all that are there, to get together and go out to eat afterwards.
Hope to see you, God bless, and no matter what anyone says, keep on loving God, and know that he never quit loving you. People may and will fail in that concept, but God is Good! All the time!
Mike
