There are kids in schools that want to wrestle but their school district can't afford the cost of a coach and transportation for just a handful of kids.
Sorry, I don't buy that as an excuse not to have a program. To me, the only reason not to have a program is that your school population is not large enough to support one with kids. Why is it some schools can/could afford a program and others can/could not? IMO, if you can support an 11 man football program then your school should have a wrestling program period.
I will say this...the idea the teams have to split up for Regionals is something I have never agreed with. Some states allow sharing teams to stay together during the postseason, but the punchline is that the enrollment numbers are added together and that program would compete in a higher class. So if Pittsburg and SMC combined in this case for wrestling, chances are they'd have to be a 5A school.
If we allow the sharing through the state tournament then you've just eliminated the reason for many schools to have a program. This would effect not only wrestling but many sports. Invision neighboring schools all over agreeing to each drop a different sport each, so they can co-op and save dollars. It could and would happen.
