Why is it that KSHSAA limits the amount of wrestling a wrestler may participate in. Do they do the same for other sports. Is there a maximum number of games a basketball team may particpate in?
Thanks!

KSHSAA limits other sports as well. For example you can play 5 quarters of basketball in a day. I think you can play in 2 football games in a week.

So a kid can live wrestle for an hour every day at practice, but can't wrestle more than five 6 minute matches with 45 minute breaks in between on a Saturday.
Hmmm.

Is the five match limit only a KSHSAA rule or is it a National Federation rule also? We wrestle in Nebraska some and they follow the same daily participation guidelines as we do; makes me think it is an National Federation rule.

Yes, this is a national rule and no matter how unfair it may seem it will not change unless the majority of states petition to do so. Even then it might not change. The fact of the matter is, if you run a 16 man bracket in one day this situation is very likely to happen. Everyone knows this going in, so you have to live with it. I too have had wrestlers forfeit third place because of five matches, that's the rule and the whole nation has to adhere to it.

All sports have a limit to the amount of playing time an athlete can do in a day or in a season. It is to make sure there are not coaches or schools who push an athlete too far. There are cases in each where it can get a bit discouraging and a player can not finish out the year or game because of the limit.

I've never heard of a player not getting to finish a varsity game due to playing time limits.

Coach Williams,
In basketball, I'm pretty sure overtime is an extension of the 4th quarter. The 5th quarter applies to a separate game (usually JV). In theory, you could have 10 overtimes and not lose participants to the 5 quarter rule.
Most tournaments we have been to have eliminated this by having 2 pools and then a small bracket to determine 1 thru 4.

That is correct. OT is an extension of the 4th quarter. I was talking about how there is usually a C-team, JV, and varsity game on the same day. A player has five quarters on that day to use in those games.

That's because the coach knows how many quarters or games his kids can play and holds them out of JV games. Think about how many football teams have to play three games in a week? ZERO or how many basketball teams play two games a weeek? ZERO. There has to be a limit for liability reasons. Yeah it would probably fine if a kid could wrestle six times in a day, the rule's been in place for about 15 years good luck getting it changed.

Coach, that is exactly my point. I am aware of the weekly limitations imposed on other sports. As you stated, you can plan ahead for that. In wrestling, you can't plan ahead like that (other than to just not lose).
16 man and larger brackets are not uncommon for one day kids tournaments. I have seen many kids wrestle 6 matches in one day. I don't think 16 man brackets are unreasonable for a high school tournament and the kids should be allowed to wrestle out the bracket.
I have no desire to attempt to change it (don't have that much conviction or energy). Just don't agree with it.

I would be ok with the rule being changed. This rule doesn't really apply to us because we do not go to any 1 days that are that large, but I would vote yes for a change if it was up to me.

What would you change the rule to? 6 per day to allow 16 man brackets? Or unlimited to finish a bracket?

Overtimes in basketball and football are considered to be extensions of the fourth quarter, just as an overtime in wrestling is considered to be a continuation of the match which ended in a tie.
In my opinion (an administrator here) the five match limit should be extended to six per day either by allowing it in all situations or by allowing special dispensation in a limited manner when a sixth match is necessary to determine placing and points.

Getting this changed is difficult at best but even more problematic since Kansas does not have a vote on the National Wrestling rules body. This is due to the fact that we do not comply fully with the NF rules on weigh-ins, hydration, fat testing and descent.
I accept your "compliment" in the manner in which it was offered.
