If I didn't I would probably be like most people and not notice that this weight class was quietly eliminated.
Weight classes are seldom if ever "quietly" eliminated.
My question is why? I realize that this weight class will never fill a 16 man bracket, but is that any reason to eliminate it.
You asked and answered your own question. I don't know the history of this weight class but if it got eliminated it was after careful thought and for good reason. Being able to partially fill an 8 man bracket once a decade is not a good enough reason to keep it around.
