Yes I know a sore subject with most of you. But Will wants to wrestle Liberty and has about 1Lb. to lose. From a coaches stand point or parent what kind of diet or foods can a kid that has little body fat do to lose 1Lb. Before this starts a war keep in mind Liberty goes by 5Lb. increments, not 3Lb. like Kansas. We exercise daily but that last pound is hard to lose. A little input would be helpful.....Thanks....

If you have him suck on jolly ranchers and spit in a bottle, he should be able to spit 1/2 to 3/4 lb in the 3 hr drive to KC. My older boy can spit 1/2 lb in less than an hour if he's really trying. Draw him a line on an empty bottle and make it a game. It's very easy and doesn't hurt the kid at all.

Have done the jolly rancher bit in the past to make weight for state due to a growth spurt... Taking a whizzzz won't do it come weigh in time....Looking for health food ideas to lose 1Lb. and maintain the weight your striving for without yoyoing.

Increase his salads and veggies, and decrease his meat portions a little. No sodas or sugar drinks. Cut out snacks for about a week prior to weigh-ins. If he can't live without snacks, let him eat low fat/low sodium popcorn. Just suggestions...

He can sweat off a pound easy, run with sweats on in a hot room,a pound is nothing. he should be able to sweat that off an hour prior to weigh ins. With little body fat he is going to have to lose water weight and you do that by sweating.

There is a diet on the internet called the "wrestlers diet". It is very good and you will find that you actually will be eating more than you think. It is designed for high school kids so you may have to change it a little. In our house, whenever one of my kids is close to his weight or wants to lose just a pound, they eat progressive soup for a couple of days and all the vegetables/fruit they want. It has always worked for us. Good Luck. Here is a link to the diet: http://hawkwrestling.com/articles/wrdiet.htm

My son cut about 5 lbs for Tulsa... (and has kept it off)

Everything sugar free. Flavored water is one of the kids' favorite drinks now.

100 calorie packs (including microwave popcorn) are great for snacks.

Fiber One cereal for breakfast every day (it actually tastes great) to keep him regular.

Whole grain carbs, leaner meat selections, and monitor sodium intake to avoid retaining water.

You can definitely do this without your wrestler feeling fatigued or deprived.

Good Luck

I have a program I helped develop with input from TC Dantzler, Eric Akin and several others including a couple of OU and OSU wrestlers, it has worked but takes a little effort. I only provide it to older wrestlers, and depending on the weight of the wrestler. Contact me via pm or email with the details of the wrestler and I will respond accordingly. I know several on these boards have gotten the program from me and can verify it works. Over the years, I have come to realize there is the right way, and the wrong way to cut any weight. Thre is also the right time, wrong time, and sometimes, never the time.

if it is crunch time, we have found that with plenty of sweats/warm-ups on, 1000 jump ropes will cut off about a pound. the number of reps will increase the smaller you are. to be safe do about 1200-1300. shouldn't take you very long to get them in either.

USAWMom - I hate to ask what age and weight your child is that you would allow him to lose 5 lbs. Hopefully he is older and had it to lose.

You want to be careful with the amount of sweats and other things. Depending on how much, it could work toward a disqualification from a tournament. There are safe guides to use, and if going against those directives, a wrestler can be dq'd prior to a tournament. I personally wish officials were present to see more of this. I have seen little 6 & Under kids over the years wearing plastics and all kinds of garbage. Even saw a wrestler rolled up in a mat one time. I firmly believe, the safest way to make weight is over a long course, not a quick fix. If a quick fix, then there is little benefit to the wrestler, in fact, I believe more harm.

I thought the rules just called for a dq if the wrestler was using plastics, It is my understanding that sweats are alright. It's just a pound, A little bit of running and it's gone.

O.K. I love all the responses i"ve gotten, and thank you it has helped me greatly. My son is 8u, is in great shape and on any given day weighs about 56lb. Yes running, peeing, spitting, will all work for short term but what about a 1 month stint for subs. I'm looking for a balanced healthy "diet" that will keep his spirts up and keep him strong.

An 8 year old doesn't need to be cutting weight.Let him eat and wrestle at 58lbs.If he wants to wrestle at liberty at 55 let him run off a pound. But for a month it's not healthy making an 8 year old cut.

Not only as a mother, but as a healthcare professional, I would never allow his wrestling to interfere with his overall well-being. We are a wrestling family and have made a lifestyle change to support his decision to lose the weight and keep it off. It is not a diet or a quick fix, but a lifestyle change for the entire family.

He discussed it with his coach and together they chose for him to drop two weight classes (5lbs) over the course of a month. My son will never sleep/run in garbage bags or be deprived of a meal. We understand that sometimes sacrifices must be made, but not at the expense of my son's health.

what kind of diet or foods can a kid that has little body fat do to lose 1Lb.

This was part of the original post by spex, An 8 year old that has little body fat doesn't need to be cutting weight for a prolonged period. If he was overweight yes, then lose it but it sounds like this kid is already lean, run off a pound for Liberty then wrestle at 58 the rest of the season, Why burn him out at 8 years old.
