The Kids Executive Board reviewed (as they do every few years) the issue of historically sparsely filled weight classes at their meeting this fall. They voted to do away with a couple of weight classes. That vote had to be approved (like several actions taken by the executive committee) by the State Body (which is made up by a representative of each and every club).

My opinion (I am not the one to give a finite answer) on the issue is that it is set for this year. It can be reviewed next fall.

Now, purely my opinion ... I am sure that if I had a 12 year old that weighed 57-pounds, I would be a bit miffed over what the Executive Board and the State Body did!

However, if I can assure you, it was discussed at length. Over the years, there have been weight classes added and some removed. These are always the lightest and the heaviest.

Now playing Devils advocate ... if I have an 8 year old that weighs 180 #'s, should I complain because USAW Kansas Kids does not accommodate him? Or if I had a 12 year old that weighed 52 #'s should I also have an issue?

I have always been a bit concerned when a kid is a State medalist merely by "weight." Every year at State we give awards to a kid who did not win a match!

WAIT ... I know that this is not the fault of the kid! I know that they go to every practice and work just as hard as every one else.

But I do feel a little more sympathy for the upper weight kids who we have effectively eliminated from competition.

Should USA Wrestling-Kansas Kids accommodate "every" child regardless of weight or any other factor? To me, this would be a worthy discussion where we discuss a broader issue not just whether we are "being unfair" to the 12/60!
