Well the Battle at the Border (apologies to the Metro Classic) is over ... and it was one we will be talking about for years!
Team Kansas built a bit of lead thru 160-pounds. But Missouri would win 3 of the next 4 to win the match, 35-38.
It was a battle! Our boys from Kansas had a few opponents on their back and most Kansans thought they were falls. We still picked up the wins but in Greco and Freestyle your opponent can earn team points even in a loss. However, I must state, that Kansas was losing a bout handily but the wrestler from Missouri knocked himself loopy and had to injury default.
A lot of our grapplers wrestled up a weight class as our coaching staff was trying to maximize the matchups. I commend ALL our wrestlers.

We handled a short-handed Michigan squad with relative ease.
I have to mention Joshua Bush. He weighed in this morning 185-pounds but yet wrestled up, to 215-pounds and scored the victory by pinfall! Actually he was on his own back but bridged through the predicament and ended up on top!!

As was the case in Greco Thursday, we started the match with no fire whatsoever. Previously we found some steam ... today we did not. Team Kansas lost to Team Minnesota 2. Fortunately, if we beat a very good New Jersey team, the way I have it figured, we will still be in the Champions bracket. If we don't ... tomorrow we will be in the consolation rounds!
Team Kansas needs to find some energy, it's been a long day, but we can do it!!

Well ... it's over ... Team New Jersey was a bit much for the men of Team Kansas. I am sure Chief will report on the exact score later but Jersey had some beasts in the upper weights!
Tomorrow, it is the consolation bracket ... let's work hard and come back for 9th!!

In the 16 team Consolation bracket, the key dual for us will be Iowa in the 2nd round. Kansas has a real chance of making the finals and a possible rematch with Minnesota 2 or New York. The bottom half has those two teams along with a pretty tough Florida team.
Go Kansas! Finish well!

Last night in the match against New Jersey, we were witness to a true rarity in wrestling ... a tap out! Chase Nelson was facing Jersey's John Guzzo.
Guzzo finished 3rd at 140-pounds in Fargo last season and is an accomplished wrestler. About 10 seconds into the bout, Nelson exploded with a head-and-arm, taking Guzzo to his back. After a few seconds, Guzzo was actively tapping out. I have seen a few matches and I have talked to others who have seen one or two themselves ... all of us, have never seen a tap out!
In the rule book, FILA nor NFHS, will you find that a wrestler can end a match by tap out ... but the ref's had little choice!
Chase was been an absolute beast in this tourney ... he's a great young man too!

I think this was a great tournament...the level of wrestling was wonderful. Team Kansas put together a team they could be proud of...not only good wrestlers, but great young men! Thank you Team Kansas for all your hard work to make us proud!!!

I just saw that the kid that Chase Nelson pinned in 30 seconds at the Duals from New Jersey, John Guzzo, is ranked as the #1 Freshman in the nation at 140 by Intermat. By Chase's performance at the Duals, the secret is getting out about young man from Wichita Heights!

Not to be picky, Chief, but Chase did not actually pin him. It was a tap-out! He would have been pinned in 5 more seconds, in my estimation.

To clarify, a tap-out pin. They officially called it a fall.
