Glad to see they kept the entire NCKL league together at the same regional. I know, I can't believe they put all the 4A schools in our league in the same regional too!

Shawnee Mission-Bishop Miege High School – Mike Bohaty & Dave Eller, Regional Managers Bonner Springs, Kansas City-Harmon, Kansas City-Schlagle, Kansas City-Turner, Kansas City-Washington, Kansas City-Wyandotte, Lansing, Shawnee Mission-Bishop Miege
Perhaps the weakest regional in Kansas High School Wrestling history. However, it will save on gas expenditures!

How many 4A teams made it to the state football playoffs?
32! half of the classification was invited to play in the state playoff system.
There is still only one champion.
There are some week regions in every classification. But there will be only one state champion at every weight class.

Then lets just invite all 32 5A and 6A teams to state and eliminate the regional. It is a waste of time and money to host a tournament where seven team's combined rosters could not beat the remaining one team. You know where I stand, 5A and 6A should be combined. Economically this makes a lot more sense to have four sixteen team regionals than eight, eight team regionals that will be missing 30% of their possible competitors and place many wrestlers with losing records in the state tournament. More socialism...

First of all they will not combine so it is a mute point, but for conversation sake although I agree the bottom end of 5a and 6a is weaker the top end is stronger. 9 of the top 10 teams are either 6a or 5a. Combining those two classes would greatly imbalance the system. I don't know the correct answer except for one state tournament or a grand state. Then you don't have to worry about balance.

24/7 Let's look at last year. Who were those 9 teams in your opinion that were 5a or 6a? We can't base it off this year yet because most teams have yet to step on the mat, but who were the top 10 last year?

I am not sure who 24/7 has in mind for his top 9 or 10 teams this year in 5A/6A. As far as results at 5A & 6A State last year it was as follows:
6A Goddard 209, Derby 204.50, Manhattan 116.50, SM East 91, Wichita NW 91, Garden City 88, Wichita Heights 87, BV North 83, Olathe North 69, Junction City 67
5A Bishop Carroll 184.50, Ark City 137.50, Gardner Edgerton 107.50, Liberal 107.50, Valley Center 103.50, Emporia 101.00, Salina South 100.50 St. Thomas Aquinas 94, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 84, Shawnee Heights-Tecumseh 79

So he is saying that the best 10 teams in the state are nine of those plus one team from 4-3-2-1A? Interesting!

I simply looked off this years all-class rankings posted by Chief. And as I look at it I should have said 9 out of 11.
2008-09 Preseason All-Class Ranking:
TEAMS - All-Class 1. Goddard - 6A 2. Derby - 6A 3. Wichita Heights - 6A 4. Clay Center - 4A 5. Bishop Carroll - 5A 6. Smith Center - 321A 7. Emporia - 5A 8. Lansing - 5A 9. Liberal - 5A 10t. Gardner - 5A 10t. Manhattan - 6A
And you are correct we have yet to wrestle to verify this year, but Chief does some pretty accurate research. My point was that to use the bottom end of 6A/5A to justify a merger is not looking at the whole picture when the top end of both 6A and 5A is very strong. Not trying to start a war just trying to defend against the whole "put 6a and 5a together" argument. Either leave them as they are or put them ALL together!

Posted April 9, 2008 by Smokey Cabin using final rankings from last years all-class rankings on the same topic last year. Maybe my comment about 9 out of 10 is not accurate, but a combined 6a/5a would not be a fairly dispersed system according to this data.
Acutual post of Smokey starts here...
Using the Chiefs final all class ranking of 114 kids
59% of the ranked 114 kids came from 5A and 6A or 64 schools
41% of the ranked 114 kids came from 1A,2A,3A, & 4A Schools I think there are at least 128 schools - I did not count all the 1,2,3A schools that have wrestling - I think there are 64 in 4A - just an observation.
11 of the 14 - number 1 ranked kids were from 5A or 6A. 22 of the 28 - number 1 & 2 ranked kids were from 5A or 6A
If 5A and 6A classes were combined it would be one fun state tournament to watch. Based on these numbers I would not say 5A and 6A are weak - they just do not have as many schools. Each school still only has 14 varsity spots.
Now back to me speaking. I would agree that the bottom of 5a/6a is weaker and that it is easier to qualify for state in those classes, but based on the data above it may be harder to WIN state in 5a/6a.
