I think Keegan Smith (Goodland) beat Jimmy Stults (Valley Center) this weekend at the Eagle Invite.

Keegan Smith won the match 4-2 ( He was voted the OW for pool C). The dual between Goodland and Valley Center was a nail bitter, with the outcome not known until the final match was wrestled. Hats off to both teams, the wrestlers left it all out on the mat.

He started out as 3rd and has dropped all the way to 7th without a loss to any of these guys. I only know of one loss for him this year (and that was to an OK kid) and he has actually beat ranked wrestlers (Cole). I know some 189 pound guys have moved up and Caylor is the big dog but why rank the 189 pounders over this guy. Also, (and this is not meant disrespectfully) but where did Jake Woten come from? I did not see him in any of your early rankings and then poof, there he is.

Again, Im not the expert you guys are, I just was trying to understand the logic!

Here you go...

Woten beat Hicks in the semis at State and had started the year at 285. He made 215 and he was added to the 215 ranking ahead of Hicks. Jacob Nowak started the year at 189 after finishing 41-8 last year at 285 while placing 3rd at State. He is now back at 215 to stay. Those credentials also put him ahead of Hicks. Nothing that Josh is doing, it just got more crowded. As for Davis and Kriss... Nate went 35-6 last year and placed 3rd at 189. Kriss went 36-4 and placed 4th at State.

I am a big fan of Josh Hicks. He was on our National Middle School team and destroyed everybody he wrestled. I expect big things from him this year and would not be surprised to see him back in the top 3.

Hey Chief

Zahorsky will be wrestling 140 the rest of the year. He was giving up a little to much weight at 145.

Chief,
I have noticed that you have ranked Linwood Peoples near the top of 140 pounds. I have read earlier posts about him, but they do not provide much information. I was wondering about his history and the criteria you used to rank him so high when others in the weight have history, albeit at different weights(Freestyle/Greco wrestling & state placings). I'm sure he's a fantastic wrestler.

Also for what it's worth Cade Blair is the reigning State Champ at 135. With so many wrestlers in this ranking coming from various 2007-2008 weights (119-145) he may deserve the #1 ranking until someone beats him.

As always, I really enjoy your rankings and it makes the time go by faster for me here in Afghanistan. Thanks.

Hey Rodney!

God's protection for you in Afghanistan. We are free because of the brave!

140 has become more interesting. The depth was not there until Parker, Linwood and Joey moved there. My thoughts on the top of the rankings are this:

Parker Madl and Cade Blair are basically a toss-up in my opinion. The change in position was due to a few basic differences. If I can't decide between two wrestlers, their year-round wrestling accomplishments break the tie.

Parker Madl:

1. Tech falled Kyle Ash and beat the Florida State Champion on his way to All-American status at Fargo.
2. Took 4th place at the USA Folkstyle Nationals, losing only to the OW and the 2nd place kid.

Cade Blair had a fantastic State tournament and should repeat in 5A. Many National rankings have Parker Madl ranked higher than both Cody Shavlik and Cade. WUSA Magazine had Madl #11, Shavlik #23 and Blair was HM in their ranking of Sophomores.

Linwood Peoples on the other hand is certainly not as credentialed. He has had some great matches with Phillip Henes as well as Tyler Caldwell in past years. We should see him and Parker in the Final of JOCO tomorrow night.

It would not surprise me to see any of the wrestlers mentioned beat each other. It's part of what makes the rankings fun!

Keep in touch!

How do the 321A wrestlers in the all class drop in the rankings if they hardly ever wrestler any kids from 4 to 6A? Sure they may be descent but thats just wrestling against the same 321A kids at almost every tourney.

Wasn't that an amazing call the ref made in the Stults/Keagan match at Colby? I've played a role in wrestling in some fashion for over 25 years and never seen an uncontrolled reverse AND 2 back points all in the last 3 secs of a match. Not taking away from either wrestler. They are both pretty good.
