I was shocked that Leupol didn't make it. Whether or not he made it (or didn't make it in this case), to me does not take away what kind of wrestler he is (or person for that matter). I do not know him personally but did watch him wrestle several times.
I am going to advocate for the "not worthy" kids that did make it to state. My son has wrestled since he was four and he has never been to state. He is a three sport person, his weakest being wrestling. He has done it year after year because it was expected of him (he is a cousin to the Zlatnik boys). He started this year out slow, which I expected because he chose to work on off season baseball during the winter instead of wrestling kids the last 2 years. He has slowly gotten better. He wrestled as good as I have ever seen him wrestle this past weekend. Maybe he was in a "weaker" regional (Burlington), but he did still have to win 4 to get 3rd. I know he's not the best wrestler out there, but he did work hard this year and he has put in his time in. When he was in kids he was always in a tough district, and he would always come in 5th. We would watch his friends at state and see the boys that he beat all year round compete. We had to explain to him that this was the hand he was dealt and that one day, it would pay off. So please, those asking whether kids with sub-par records should get to go to state, at least give them some respect. They did have to win to get there.
