If I remember correctly, at the Wichita Classic there was talk of a "kick off" in Wichita at the new Hartman Arena.

That same weekend they are proposing the National in Kansas, Panhandle National's in Lubbock, Tx. for the belt is usually that same weekend, and they had over 23 states represented and close to 2ooo kid's. We attended and it was a well ran tourny and lookin forward to going back as well as Kansas having a National tourny, we've been waiting for Kansas to get a National and to go to it. Panhandle hasn't posted their date this year that i'm aware of but i'm hoping Kansas and Panhandle isn't the same weekend cause I really would like to attend both.

Well if what is going around is true & these guys are pulling major sponcers like Blue Chip or something and we don't suppport it, well then shame on us. Wichita is a great place for national tournaments & what a better venue? With the right people running the show and with enough support this could easily draw close to 2000 kids. Then if we are doing all of that the right way then it will help chip down some of the excuses as to why they won't bring kids state to Wichita! JMO

One thing I have never understood about people complaining the season is too long. Wrestling is not a team sport, tournaments are not mandatory, can’t the season be as long, or as short, as an individual wrestler and his parents decide! If a wrestler is getting burned out, just have him sit out a tournament or two. I guess there is some pressure to keep pace with the other wrestlers, but a wrestler can easily keep up with practice and miss a few tournaments without falling behind.

Some people will always need a rule to force them to do the right thing, even where it concerns their own child. I'm with you though, make the season as long or short as you want without changing a thing.

Yes, parents putting to much pressure on kids to win, is a problem in all sports. I noticed the relaxed attitude and all around good time every one had at the Sunflower State Games, and asked myself, “Why can’t all tournaments be this much fun for the kids ??” Well the answer is of course, because the Parents put so much pressure on the kids to win, they make the fun disappear.

The season is an opportunity to compete. An opportunity is an option. Rules to regulate an options are quite unnecessary. I have been on here advocating the changing of the date of the state championship series to an earlier date. I have never called this "shortening the season". Wrestling is an individual sport and the athlete and parents have to make the decisions that are right for them. Do they always make the right decisions, probably not but when you don't get what you are seeking you get experience. Hopefully the experience will lead to better decisions in the future. More regulations mean less experience. The attitude Steve experienced at the Sunflower state games is pretty much what you will find at all spring and summer events. The changes I have advocated do reduce the pressure to "keep up" in hopes of retaining a larger interest in the future without negating the opportunities available for those who can and do wrestle year round. You have to be flexible to appeal to a wider audience. The MOST important lesson your wrestler has to learn is how to cope with losing. Losing is a GOOD thing but many are run out of the sport by the inability to handle losing. Teach your wrestlers to embrace a loss and to learn from it. If you don't lose you don't get better!

Well I hope that when this is made official and it is posted on here then that thread don't get HIJACKED by people crying & complaining. This is an excellent chance for KS kids to see some national competition at the begining of the season without traveling to Ok, TX, or CO. If you want to only wrestle 3 weeks a month and only 4 months a year then that is your choice and I will never fault you for it. All I ask for is the same respect when my sons choose to do it 7 months a year.

hahahahaha! this is quite laughable. Just because a tournament calls itself a "national" tournament, doesn't necessarily make it a true national tournament. what make you think that those OK peeps are going to skip cliff keen, or TX peeps skip panhandles/cotton bowl or CO peeps skip monster match/rocky mntn nats to come to the "national" tournament in Kansas? There are WAY too many "national" tournaments now-a-days for it to really even be considered a honor to place at a lot of them anymore. Nationals should be just that, a true national tourney like Fargo or Kids FS/GR or HS nats, etc. I don't think, considering one has the option of attending a "national" tourney literally every week during the season, someplace in America, that it's that big of deal whether Wichita has a pre-season nats or not. It'll just turn into a big local tournament, just like the Wichita Classics has become.
