Wish I could be there this weekend! Looks like some REALLY tough potential match ups:
J. Gentzler vs. D. DeShazer U. DeShazer vs. A. Bontz Blair vs. Son Nitcher vs. C. Bontz Singular vs. Charboneau Sanchez vs. Shavlik Anderson vs. Shavlik Anderson vs. Sanchez
Any others??? I don't know if any of these will happen but they would be fun to watch!

Singular vs. Charboneau
I'm sure these two know plenty about one another's styles of wrestling as they were likely practice partners at Clay Center.
A dual between Emporia and Clay Center would be interesting enough after Coach Charboneau moved on this past year.

Is this tournament setup to match the large schools v. the small schools in the finals? It just appears so based off of the pool lineups.

I would like to think they could have seeded this but it looks very, very lopsided. The #1 5A and 6A teams along with highly ranked Andover Central and another 5A and 6A school. Maybe somebody could elaborate...

They have done this the last 3 or 4 yrs that I can remember. Derby, BC were alway on the same side along with others. The other pool seemed not as strong for sure. I guess you put on the Tournement you make the rules.

You're trying to say that valley center stacks the deck in their favor, but the truth is that valley has never won their own tournament. So even if they have been stacking in their favor, it obviously hasn't worked.

So even if they have been stacking in their favor, it obviously hasn't worked. How many times has VC been in the finals. The yrs. I was around watching, VC couldn't get around BC or Derby to win their tournament. But I would bet they came in 2nd alot in the tournament as winner of the other pool. When teams like BC & Derby and others pounded on each other, VC had the easier pool every time. Like I said before, your tournament, your rules. There were still alot of great wrestling & a well ran tournament. Still worth while tournament to watch - just wish the cards were stacked alittle more even.

That is just that the other pool has a better team that always beats them in the finals there is no way of stacking that on ur odds just the pool play.

How about this POOL 1 Derby, Valley Center, Chanute, Clay Center, Douglas POOL 2 Emporia, Andover Central, Great Bend, Wichita Heights, Ottawa This would be more balanced.

no iam saying that they are stacking them for the pool play at least they cant stack the finals cause the team out of the other pool is going to be good so theres no way of running around the other team that they will meet in there placing matches sorry for miss wording that last post.

Wrestling is wrestling and its only December! I enter my team in this tournament to get a feel for what the best are going to be like and start preparing for them for February. If a team gets 8th in the December Duals and is a top 3 team at State does it really matter. Coach Shelton and the Valley Center people are top notch people and run a class act tourney! Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

The tournament has been set up for the past few years so schools get to wrestle other schools within their classification. This is done so you get a chance to see as many schools as possible that you will be wrestling in the post season. We changed classifications this year so we need to see other teams. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just making things up to complain about.
I feel we run a good tournament with good competition and I am proud of what the tournament has evolved into. Since I have not heard a single complaint or concern from any of the coaches who are bringing their teams, I feel confident they are OK with how the tournament runs.
I have tried to live my life with the idea that it is better to talk to someone, rather than talk about them. With that being said if "rideorider" or "Log in" would like the opportunity to discuss this further, they are welcome to call me personally anytime.

I agree with coach Shelton! We (Chanute) dont go there to wrestle Carrol or Derby. We go there to see Clay Center, Valley Center,Douglass, and Ottawa, and get some quality opponents. What good does it do us if we dont get to wrestle the schools we will wrestle at the state tournament???

Coach Shelton, I have said I thought your Tournament was a good tournament and was run very well. I also appreciate your thoughts on why the teams that are there are there. I don't have a problem with that either and can see value in those thoughts. As a wrestling fan, I just have noticed over the yrs how the pools are or could be viewed as lopsided. I have had conversations with others about this while in the stands, but since this isn’t Feb and the tournament is nothing more than good mat time for all teams, nothing has been said because it really doesn’t matter. So I apologies, to you and the VC team, if you have take this as an attack on the Team or Tournament. I wish you team well this season!

Coach Shelton,
That is a great explanation. I understand your reasoning but for us fans we would like to see those who will not be seeing each other in regionals and state. The sad story of four state tournaments is that many of the best wrestlers in Kansas never face each other. A tournament like this could provide some great interclass match ups!
