I agree Richard we should be able to disagree as adults. I think I just had a couple of bad days on the forum. No hard feelings on my part.

is the State Tournament on saturday and sunday?

The wrestling starts on Saturday morning. It goes pretty much all day on Saturday. They try to get in two frontside, one backside, and a third frontside match on Saturday. Sunday morning they wrestle the backside out to the third place match. Sunday afternoon they have a pretty neat parade of all the placers and finalists into the arena. They introduce all the finalists to the crowd. It really is pretty impressive. I hope you get the opportunity to experience that this year. After the introductions they start wrestling the 1st, 3rd and 5th place matches all at the same time on different mats. They get their awards and pictures taken afterwards.

I wish I could have sent you a private e-mail on this. Two things first last night my son weighed 150.0 after practice. This morning he weighed 148.5. Whether it is a pound or 1.5 or even .5, it can make a difference whether you wrestle that day. These kids commit to a weight class early, long before February when this was communicated to most of us. They are used to a system where they compete all year being able to weigh in on Saturday morning. They are also used to State weigh-in having the Saturday morning weigh-in option available to them. If we are concerned about cutting of weight, we should be more concerned about unreasonably large weight class spreads like the 150 to 165 one that my son would have in 12 & under.

Second I too reread the Sept. Executive Council minutes and the State Body minutes. I also did not find this change in the State tournament weigh-in procedure mentioned in either. Clearly the majority in our State did not have a chance to provide input on this change before the decision was made.

In D2 we can change weight right up to and including the day of sub-district seeding.

That is not the committment that I am talking about. You might be able to change your weight class for subs right now but the committment I am talking about is the personal one that each wrestler makes early in the season.

I know my son decides sometime in January each year what weight he is going to wrestle at for the State tournament series. That early decision influences a lot of things most importantly the weight class of wrestlers that he competes against in preparation for State. I think there is a big difference for a kid on the 150 bubble wrestling other kids 140 to 150 all season then all of a sudden now being asked to wrestle 165 pound wrestlers. I think the rules were changed in the middle of the game here. If they had to change it should have been for the March 2005 year.

What does everyone think about challenging for second? I think in a big tournament like this the third place man/woman should be able to challenge the second place man/woman if they havent already wrestled.

There are rules and there is what is right. If the tournament director can arbitrarily (probably not spelled correctly) change this rule, then the tournament director should be able to change it back to what is right. You don't change the rules in the middle of the game in my opinion. In looking over the timing of the decision, the lack of reporting of it in the minutes, and the late announcement of it to membership, I believe the implementation should have been delayed one year.

Anyway I am tired of posting on it on this topic right now. I have made an appeal to Mike Juby. He is forwarding my appeal to have the Saturday weigh-in reinstated this year to the Kids Executive Council. I do not intend to address this subject again in this topic at least until I hear of their decision on my appeal. I need to stop looking at this topic now because it just is truly upsetting me too much. If anyone wants to discuss this further with me at this point, send me a private e-mail.

IF THERE IS JUST A FEW THAT WEIGH IN ON SATURDAY AS SAID WHY DON'T THEY JUST HAVE A SHORT WEIGH IN ON SAT. LIKE SAY FROM 7:30 TIL 8:00 AND NO ONE WOULD HAVE TO GET UP EARLY AND EVERYONE WOULD BE HAPPY. ALL THEY WOULD NEED IS ONE SCALE AND ONE PERSON

can kid clubs utilize the home weigh in option?, the same as the high schol rules imply? if this is the case, if you can, do you have to have a school administrator present?

I do not have kids in wretling, nor grandkids, but read with interest the postings here. I one year traveled 5000 miles in the State of Kansas with a child promoting a product in 4-H. I know the time and energy it took not to say days off from work. I know the difficulty of having to get off work. I live in NorthCentral Kansas and have traveled to Denver frequently to a Dr. Know how long that takes.... and to have the weigh in cut off at that time is difficult to say the least. I have no vested interest in this and looked at both sides. I get up every morning at 4 am and go to bed around 11 PM sometimes am up several times in between. I know how hard it is to do this..... Also Pulling weight is something these kids should not even be considering..... from a nurses standpoint...when I innocently overheard about kids dropping 10-20 pounds I cringed... I have taken care of them after, when their intestines were so messed up that they were in a world of hurt.... My brother did that some 40 years ago. I know the long term problems he has now. BE CAREFUL... There are other ways to wrestle effectively.
But to get from Liberal to Topeka you have to take a whole day off....I think this is a Kids sport I think, I think.

Mike Juby indicated to me today that the Kids Executive Council was not indicating any support to have a Saturday weigh-in this year at State but that it might be reconsidered for next year's tournament at the State Body meeting. I appreciated the prompt attention that Mike and the rest of the Executive Council gave to my appeal. Thank you.

I have watched with interest this topic on the forum. It seems to me that this another tale of how people in Topeka have no inclination of what it is like living in Western Kansas. I grew up in Western Kansas and love it there. There are so many advantages. The disadvantage is that you have to drive several hours to events. Asking for a day off of work is okay if you work in an office but not okay if you work at school or farm. What happens when there is only a few people in the club that can drive the kids down but there are more kids than room? My question is not about the Saturday weigh in, it is about the unfairness of cutting off the weigh in at 7:00pm. In reality, that means that you need to plan to be there at 6:00 so that if anything happens on the road (flat tire, ect.), you still have some time. I think that if things were reversed and the State Tournament were in Western Kansas, you would see all the people in Topeka complain if they had to drive down and weigh in before 7:00.

I live in western kansas and i have no problem with the weigh in time. I don't work in an office, school, farm, and I don't own my own business. I guess I have an understanding employer. We've all known for 6 months when state wrestling was. If you plan ahead for things I don't think 1 day is going to make or break anyone. Put a little extra money away here and there. I go in early some times and stay late some times and I throw in some Saturdays. We're taking the whole day off and arriving at 3 to 3:30 so we can get weighed in and go eat a decent meal then go to our room and relax. Without having to rush through the entire weekend. I've read the posts on here and I don't see anyone from western, southwestern or northwestern kansas all fired up about the weigh in times. Looks like people that are cutting weight, are trying to use us as scapegoats. I went to the state body meeting and there was no complaining about the weigh in time then!!!! Good Luck to all wrestlers over the next two weeks. Parents make some sacrifices for your children. Think of them and not yourself all the time.

Taking off early from work doesn't bother me as much as pulling my boy out of school early for the ride. I think it sends the wrong message. A kid should be able to qualify and wrestle at State without missing school. I'm surprised this hasn't been a point of discussion. I think no Saturday weigh-in is fine, but a 7:00 cut-off is unreasonable for a 3 1/2 hour drive.

Most the kids in SE Kansas are on Spring Break next week
