With all the talk earlier in the season on which classification is the toughest here are a few stats on state qualifiers with losing records: 321A- 0 4A- 4 5A- 37 6A- 23 Just something to ponder on

This is not an appropriate measure to just throw out and compare one class to the other.
One of the problems with a lot of the 321A wrestlers records is that they tend to wrestle other 321A schools rather than meet up with the other 3 classes. This tends to skew the numbers because you might wrestle the same people in your regional several times and help pad your win percentage. Norton is one of the examples of a program that tries to mix the schedule up with all 4 classes.
The problem with the two large classes is that there are only 32 programs in each classification. This cuts down the amount of winning records that would be in a bracket at regionals and enables more losing records to squeeze through.
What is appropriate to say about 321A and 4A is that it is much more difficult to qualify to state than 5A and 6A. This is because of the sheer size of brackets 16 plus kids versus 8 or less.

Well said Rickey. I wondered how long it would take to start this thread again this year. Petition for a Grand State again and this whole discussion becomes mute!

I did not want to start another argument on here. All I wanted to do was present the numbers as they stand. I have followed all classes for many years and have the up-most respect for the big schools. I just wanted to put the numbers out for people to form their own opinion.

Pretty much sums it up right there ha ha ha great work man! Doesn't sum anything up. If you really believe that you don't know much. This is not an appropriate measure to just throw out and compare one class to the other.
This is a very valid statement. The problem with the two large classes is that there are only 32 programs in each classification. This cuts down the amount of winning records that would be in a bracket at regionals and enables more losing records to squeeze through.
This is not. The problem with the two "large classes" is not there's only 32 teams. It is there's always 2 jacked up regionals. This happens every year because the association refuses to seed regionals in wrestling. What is appropriate to say about 321A and 4A is that it is much more difficult to qualify to state than 5A and 6A. This is because of the sheer size of brackets 16 plus kids versus 8 or less. No!, it is not appropriate to say this. There are kids that are not going to state that where in the NW Wichita regional or the Bishop Carroll regional that would qualify in just about any other region regardless of class. Tell them it's easier when they have already beaten 4A/3A kids that are going. They would love to have been in 4A or 3A. And I looked at the brackets and they don't all have 16, especially in 3A, some had 10, not much different than 8 huh. Anyway, it is not the quantity of kids in a bracket that makes it tough, it is the quality. It all comes down to which region and which weight. That is what determines who goes to state.

The Norton regional was very tough and left some state placers at home this weekend. No system will ever be perfect, and at the end of the day there will always be some good wrestlers left at home, who just had a bad day of wrestling. Hopefully it serves as motivation to work harder and spend more time on the mat improving their technical skills.

In the context of this thread, let's not forget this said by Doug in another thread .... but keep in mind that rankings mean nothing this time of year. Some kids show up when it counts most. I saw a whole bunch of that yesterday!

Wish there were no classes 1,2,3,4,5 & 6. It would eliminate the need to discuss this again and it would give KS wrestling more credibility.

X, Name them! I know that there were a few brackets in the big school classes that handed out free passes to state. You will find that NONE have done so in 4A or 321A. In 4A, no regional had 16 teams because only 60 schools have wrestling programs. With 15 teams attending, it makes it pretty hard to have a "full" bracket. In 5A, the Shawnee Heights regional had just 4 full brackets and 1 with only four wrestlers (GO TO STATE FREE CARD!). I know that the 5A regional hosted by Turner had lots of incomplete brackets and at least one with a the FREE PASS being handed out. I wish I could analyze all of the regionals but unbelievably the brackets for most of the 5A and 6A regionals are unavailable.

i've been a fan of combining classes 5 and 6 for a long time. not only for wrestling but for other sports as well. i would have loved to see olathe north meet hutchinson in the football championship this year. i went to swimming meet on friday and the competition is watered down a lot by separating the classes (they were combined up until this year). i don't like in basketball and baseball you only have to win 2 games to make the state tournament and i don't like in wrestling that over 1/2 the varsity kids in 5A and 6A qualify. i really feel that in all sports the 5A schools and 6A schools are comparable, especially at the top. i think it would make the state tournaments more competitive and qualifying more impressive if we combined to just have a 5A with 64 schools.

If you are going to do the full analysis, you need to also factor in the number of kids going out for wrestling in each of the classes. Tell a kid at Emporia that is wrestling JV that it is easier to get to State in Class 5A. The KCK schools not withstanding, there are 5A and 6A programs that have more kids competing for varsity spots in the wrestling program than there are in the enitre student body at some of the 1A - 3A schools.
If you want to make it more fair, cut back to a large class and a small class. This would be comparable to Missouri's system which has 4 classes with roughly twice as many schools and still give a large number of kids the ability to compete in a State championship.
Also, a one class system may be great if the desire is to create a System where college coaches can be sure that there are no weak Kansas champions. Personally, I prefer a system that allows kids to have as many opportunities as possible and develop them as individuals as well as athletes. I went to WWE Smackdown last week and didn't notice any Kansas kids making a living as professional wrestlers.

The Shawnee Heights regional was a very strong regional and I don't think too many schools would have considered it a free pass to state, with Emporia, Shawnee Heights, Seaman, Gardner Edgerton and Mill Valley. 160 was especially tough with 3 kids ranked in the all class ranking.
Congratulations to all wrestlers in all classes for making it through the season and having the heart and drive to step on the mat and compete this past weekend.
