Sixty four thousand dollar ($64,000) question. Why do we need state tournaments. Especially since they are 1) expensive to conduct and 2) are contentious.
Smoley and others worry about the costs, especially in these very tight money days. How many dollars can be saved by eliminating all state tournaments: school travel, hotels/motels, eats, facility rents, advertizing, referees, score and time keepers, etc. Lot of money for what. So daddy and Jonny and Suzie will have something to talk about in their old age. In fact, why have interscholastic sports. More possible big savings! Cut all coaches--have just PE and intermurals. Eliminate sports travel, officials, etc. What do the athletes get from HS sports: intangibles: creates an agressive and competitive spirt, the reason to remain in school, compete for scholarships. Hey, go play club sports like the rest of the world, and do your academics to compete for scholarships.
Hell of a contentious discussion going on over state championships. He and we won this, they cheated, its unfair, something has to be done, why didn't you count this, leave it alone, whiners are lozers, winners are braggers, the system is all screwed up (I used the nicer words), etc. etc. etc. etc.
What is the answer to the $64,000 question?
Do I like my quetion? Do I like my possible answers?

My point was that ANY school, privately or publicly funded, can dominate a sport.
I still think it is entirely stupid to use STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WON as the basis for an arguement that something needs to be changed. The New York Yankees have won 27 of 105 World Series. That is almost 26% but they are only 3.3% of the league. Oh my God! Throw the Yankees out of baseball or tell them that they can only play with half of their players. Whatever they are doing it must be unfair! mlb has revenue share to "level" the playing field.

I may have the answer---relegation. Common in other countries with multi-tier/classes of sports. Perfect for KSHSAA with the six different classes. Rewards winners, punishes losers! The top winners of the lower tier plays the losers of the higher tier/class. If the lower tier winners win they move to the upper tier and the upper tier losers move down to the lower tier/class. 6A losers play the 5A winners-5A losers play the 4A winners-4A losers play the 3A winners-right on down the line. Relegate every year in all sports.
Solves our problems-the cream rises to the top and the dregs sink to the bottom. Could even put in a restriction that a school coud not be moved up or down more than one class--i.e., no 6A schools evenually in 4A, no 4A moved up to 6A, etc.
Hey, I like this!
Plus, will make the guys at KSHSAA earn their money!
