Hood split last year with Newport who is #5 at 125. He also placed higher at state than Mendenhall. Not sure of others.

Austin Hood had, what most would consider, an extremely impressive summer wrestling season that I'm sure is factored into the rankings.

Hard to imagine anyone questioning Austin's ranking. Be careful, you don't want to incur the wrath of the RedHead.

Coach Jackson told me that there were 3 types of kids that were always tough wrestlers. 1. Red Headed Kids 2. Kids with more than three cowlicks and 3. Cross-eyed wrestlers. The man has very rarely been wrong.

Austin and Moeder had the best summers of any KS wrestlers in years period. We don't have fargo champs every year. That is the toughest tournament in the country.

The man has very rarely been wrong. It's no wonder why Ark City is always so tough. I am not sure about #1, but you definately have #2 and #3 covered!!!

Triple All American/Double National Champion is kind of hard to argue. Good for him! He earned it. Those are great accomplishments, good for him. I would never want to discount the success of any kid no matter how big or small. But does that mean he is the best 119 in the state (wasnt he wrestling 105 this summer?)? I am not saying he isnt the best and I am not going to make a case for anyone else below him either, I am just trying to make sense of the rankings.

That clearly means he is the best 119 pounder in the state. He is a monster. I think he cut a lot of weight to make 105 seeing as how he wrestled 112 last season. There are no kids more accomplished in the 2012 class than Hood and Pursel. Bo chose the rodeo route in the summer cause thats what he loves to do and he is very good at it from what I hear. Both of them put 110% into everything they do and even though I would love to see them wrestle this year I am glad they are at different weights because they are both deserving of a number 1 spot in chiefs rankings.

Thank you for your opinion. I just wanted to make sure that I understood that these rankings are largely based on summer wrestling tournaments that most of these kids do not take part in.
I dont really see a need to carry this any further as my question about victories against the other top 10 wrestlers was answered by not being answered.
Best of luck to Austin this year as he goes for another state title!

I definitely didnt mean to imply that was the ONLY reason he was ranked where he is. I think Chief has explained his criteria multiple times if you review. Your message seems to lend that you feel someone else should be ranked above him, which is easy to resolve. Suggest that "Joe" should be #1, give the supporting information and put Chief on the spot. He's been known to make changes when provided additional information and opinions.

Better yet, pudgey, where do you want to be ranked? If you want the #1 spot, you can have it. Austin would be more than willing to wrestle you for it........

I will take a stab, based solely on memory, and could be mistaken...... 119: 1. Austin Hood - 11 - LOU - 4A 2. Dylan Schumacher - 11 - TMP - 321A-Don't think they wrestled 3. Dane Norris - 12 - MH - 6A Same 4. Hunter Haralson - 10 - LAW - 6A I believe Hood beat him last year at 112 5. Tim Prescott - 11 - MCP - 5A Don't they they wrestled 6. Tyler Dryden - 12 - KMC - 5A same 7. Bryce Shoemaker - 10 - BAL - 4A Bryce was 103 last year, so I doubt they wrestled 8. Jace Roy - 11 - PV - 4A I believe Roy was 103 also 9. Taelor Mendenhall - 11 - CON - 4A Don't think they wrestled.Can't recall what weight he was last year. 10. Clay Mulligan - 11 - SC - 321A 103 last year.
Several of these kids were 103 last year, so do you want to throw them out also ? It is called growing. The skills don't go away when the size comes........And unless you want p*ss in your gym bag, don't P*ss Austin off......

Pudgepacker? Are you serious? That's inappropriate for the forum. Just because you don't agree doesn't mean you give low blows to get your point across. I think Pudgey has a legitimate question. This forum is for high school wrestling. What's done in the summer, even if it is impressive, should be kept separate. Bo and Austin definitely have impressive careers already. But is Austin's as impressive as Schumacher's? He's approximately 70-1(several questionable calls throughout the one loss to now Division 1 wrestler Dalton Miller) with two state titles. Not taking away anything from Austin, just wanted to put that out there. Also, at 119 shouldn't Prescott be above Haralson? He beat him twice last year.
Thanks for all your hard work Chief! Keep it up!

i dont understand how you can say wrestling outside of high schoold should be kept seperate. Fargo is one of the toughest tournaments this nation has to offer for young wrestlers, how could you not use that as ranking critieria???

Pudgey has valid points, and so does the Hood campaign. But to take a cheap shot like that doug747...come on man. Not to add fuel to the fire but I believe Schu went to a camp this summer called "The Champions Camp" or "Camp of Champions" and put on quite a display only losing once to a nationally ranked kid from PA. 70-1 is almost as impressive as you can get and his State Tourament Performance (which I believe is criteria) is perfect. I believe hes t-fall or pinned every match hes wrestled in at state. If Schu keeps this going he WILL be one of the greatest wrestlers to ever come out of Kansas. And Pudgey, congrats on you, your families and your school's success last year after wrestling.
P.S. and absolutely NO DISRESPECT. JUST AN OPINION! I'd rather have 2 state titles and a 70-1 record than a 4th placement, State Title, and 73-12

Thanks for all your hard work Chief! Keep it up! This argument could go on forever whether or Hood or Schumacher is better. When it all comes down to it you look at strength in both teams schedule. Austin see's a lot of good competition at the Eudora tournament. I don't follow TMP because they are way out their, but the only time that I can remember Schumacher getting competition that actually pushes him was his match with Miller. I was not their so I will take your word that their was probably some questionable calls. This year I think TMP has upped their schedule by going to the Bobcat which I think is awesome. The next thing Chief probably looks at when ranking them is the strength in both of their state brackets. In 2009 I would give the nod to Hood's bracket. He took 4th as a way undersized freshmen in a pretty tough bracket with with kids like Konner Kriss, Hunter Stalford, Alex Wolf, Clay Mulligan, Jason Perez, Ty Kolterman, and Luke Cole. The next year they were both at 112 and again I would give Hood's bracket the nod over Schumacher. With kids like Newport, Nathan Reed, Alex Wolf, Mendenhall, Kolterman, and Codie Dean it was arguably tougher than Schumachers. I dis agree with the statement that summer achievements should be kept separate. Every magazine rankings uses Fargo as criteria to rank kids. College coaches look to see how kids do at Fargo, so keeping it separate would be ridiculous. JMO. P.S. and absolutely NO DISRESPECT. JUST AN OPINION! I'd rather have 2 state titles and a 70-1 record than a 4th placement, State Title, and 73-12
Also no disrepect and in my opinion I would rather have a 4th placement at state, State Title, 73-12 record, a Folkstyle National Championship, runner-up at Greco Nationals, and a Freestyle National Championship than 2 state titles and a 70-1 record.
