That Lawrence South JH schedule is over-loaded with events and points. Do they split up their squad? Or just try to manage each individuals points? KSHAA rules state: "No student shall participate in more than 8 events and no more than 18 competition points during a season" They have 9 events and 24 points. I'm guessing they have a lot of kids and they don't all compete at every event. Answer: The AD cancels duals, and on other duals kids who didn't get a chance earlier, get a chance now. The goal is to prepare them for the city dual championships. It'll be fun to watch and a good experience for the kids. I'd like to see my boy compete in some of the other national tourneys, but in the long run it'll be worth it. Being a team captain, he's learned valuable skills that will help him as he grows into a young man. For that I am grateful. Individual excellence is awesome, but in the end sometimes you have to learn to sacrifice to see others excel. "I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy." Good luck everyone as we near the end of (some of our) MS seasons and the beginning of the upcoming Kids Club season! Hopefullyt we'll all meet up at the MS State Championships in March and cheer each other on as Team Kansas at the MS Nationals duals in Iowa!

Thanks Bronson for starting this thread! I have enjoyed watching how the boys are doing over the last few weeks! Looks like tough competition coming up in Kids all across the board! Holton will finish up the season with League this upcoming Saturday.

I'm curious to know how many districts still have junior highs as opposed to middle schools? I know Lawrence does but I was under the assumption that junior highs are pretty rare.

I may be wrong, but I think it came up this last year, that Lawrence was the last holdout when it came to Junior Highs (7th, 8th, and 9th.). This got approved to be changed for Lawrence USD 497 starting next year. 9th graders are moving to the High Schools, 6th graders are moving to the Jr Highs, and the Jr High Schools will then have their names changed to Middle Schools, ie Lawrence South Middle School. Last year was the first year freshman got to compete at the HS level in sports as long as the Jr High season didn't coincide with the ongoing HS season. I love Lawrence, but don't always agree with our thinking sometime!

I have to admit, I am still holding out on the texting thing though. My plan was to have the texting thing going on, have an upgrade on a car that now has over 251K miles on it, but this window thing came up. Or, should I say windows for almost the entire house. So, for the time being, I am sticking with the caveman way of cellphone calling, and will continue to push that Dinosaur of a Camry I have up and back to Leavenworth every day.

Great job South Junior High! Coach Streeter does a tremendous job keeping these guys prepared and focused. This is the primary feeder program for Lawrence High, and one of the reasons that they are in the early stages of the best high school wrestling program that I have seen since I moved here in '85. Coach Naughton, Coach Page and Coach Streeter will keep the high school guys dialed in for the rest of the season. I am glad that these guys are driving our program. It should be a great ride.

Although we aren't as intense as some of the other Middle schools in the area and only get to wrestle triple duals agains tall the other MS's in the area we had a pretty good season for a USD-500 school. In a district where you'll have 95 kids tryout for basketball and 12 come out for wrestling and that's if we are lucky. Here at Coronado Middle, this season we started recruiting during football season. It helped that we were also the football coaches. We were able to fill all weight classes except for 75, 80,105,148 and 141. Not many in our district were able to fill 75 and 80, the lowest weight was 85. We finished the season 6-2 our only losest coming a the beginning of the season when on 110 didn't make weight. We lost those to matches 42-41. We won the rest. Can somebody tell me the rule that doesn't allow 6th graders to participate in fall.winter sports in the state of Kansas. I know that it would help us tremendously in USD-500. Plus how do I go about trying to get a district Middle School tournament going? I know this would also help boost support and interest in the kids if they knew that there was a chance to showcase what they have been doing all this time.

Good for your you guys! Sounds like you put some work in and your High School will benefit. I understand the frustration of BB. We live in the middle of BB country and every kid grows up wanting to run in Allen Field House.
I read the KSHSAA rule in the past for 6th graders and I can't quote it or give you the link, maybe later, but I believe it says 6th graders can only compete against other 6th graders in middle school. I think they may even limit them to only duals, but I maybe incorrect on that one.
MS wrestling isn't the toughest in Kansas since most schools don't participate, but I think it's great for the "team" aspect as well letting the kids represent their school. I also love to see natural wrestlers stumble across wrestling for the first time in their life and just love it!
I am sure some middle school coach will help you with the tourney info. Sounds like you guys did pretty good filling the majority of the weights. Good luck to you and I applaud your effort!!!!
