I guess I missed this post last year. It is a great one though. I always thought that it was just a mom thing, ya know, the butterflies and all. It has helped with us that we ask our two boys to set a goal at the beginning of the season, and it needs to be one that they are willing to work for. So far, it has helped releave some of our stress, but not near enough. I'm just glad to see that it's not just us moms.

I remember this post from last year \:D

Can somebody explain this for me? I coach matside for my son all year long, I get a few butterflies going into a big tournament (a little nervousness on dad's part) but when he's on the mat and me matside the butterflies leave. At one tournament this year I stepped off my son's mat to leave the coaching for someone else, since I thought maybe I was the cause of him not performing when he was going through a rough 3 weeks of the season. I was more nervous being a spectator than I was as a coach! He performed well in both his matches in fact securing pins in both. I have heard that sometimes allowing someone else coach your son has benefits because sometimes the line between coach and dad gets blurry for the child. I realized that this is harder to do than I first thought. Going into subs I find it hard to not want to be matside, but maybe I will have to suck it up and watch from afar (butterflies and all). Is this a control thing? Does this happen to more than just myself?

Crash, i can't coach my son during tournaments; at least not by myself; I get tongue tied & he doesn't listen to me that great anyway; I will be matside, but probably more body english then anything else. Good luck tomorrow.

I usually let someone else do the coaching and I am matside as the other coach. I'll chime in with an occasional get your head off the mat, or something like that, but I leave the serious coaching to someone else. He asks me to be there and like you I can't stand to be in the stands. It is a lot more nerve racking away from the action. I don't know why that is either.

I know exactly what you mean---
My son broke his elbow last year, 5 minutes before we were to leave for weigh in for State. He was so upset! He did get to walk in with all the Wrestlers that Saturday morning but, you could see the disappointment on his face when it finally sank in that he was NOT going to get to be a part of State.
He is doing GREAT this year and from the look of things, he is going to get a shot at it again this year! He is more ready this year than he was last year and the determination is there!
Good luck to all who make it to state --- it is alot of work and sacrifice for both the wrestler and the parents!
We should all be proud of the hard work and effort that they put into it.
GOOD LUCK WRESTLERS!!! \:\)

This is my oldest son's sixth year and my youngest son's second year wrestling. I am still soooo nervous every Saturday. I cannot even eat all day of the tournaments until it is over. I cannot help but to laugh at myself because I look at my boys right before they wrestle and they are so calm. It is like they are just going for a walk in the park.
My oldest broke his elbow in practice last year half way through the season and was out the rest of the year. I was scared too death all year that it would happen agian. I hope and pray that he makes it through the next two weeks without getting hurt agian.
You are definately not alone!

What if that kid, who my kid has always beat, throws him in a headlock and sticks him? Who's gonna be on the other side and in other districts? What if he gets sick? What if he doesn't make weight? What if 16 national champs just moved here from Alaska and are all going to be in his bracket at subs? What if an elephant falls from an airplane and lands on our car on the way to Subs?

Please help me.

Now we can throw track wrestling into the mix & can see the matches 6 days in advance! Let the bubble guts begin.

I for one, thrive on stress. I just can't get enough of it. Being that my stress meter is currently pegged out, the only thing I can think to do would be to add an office pool for each bracket. It would go something like this:

Pick the winners/losers throughout the entire bracket. Point systems as follows - 8 person bracket example -

Advance one round (front side) = 3 points
Advance second round (front side) = 6 points
1st Place Winne = 10 points

Advance one round (back side) = 2 points
Advance second round (back side) = 4 points
3rd Place Winner = 6 points

Add 2 points for every win by fall.
Add 1 point for major decisions.

Tie Breaker - Total points of finals match (which your must include when filling out your bracket). You may also put "pin" as your finals outcome, but you must include the period and the amount of time expired in that period.

I think I am on to something here. If only the NCAA National Championship Basketball Tournament had something like this, it would truly be March Madness.

You said it ravincan. I have seen more than a few parents shed tears watching their son's last high school match ever. I am sure I will be the one blubbering next year too.

Just wondering if any of you are on any type of medicine? Let's try to remember that this is for the kids not the parents. It is not the end of the world if your kid doesn't make it to state. Try to remember all of the kids that are sick and can't do anything because of their health. I think we should all be thankful that our kids are healthy enough to be able to compete in such a great sport as wrestling. So when you say that you are stressing over Subs, district, and state try to think about the families that have way more to worry about than wrestling.

There are many families out there that have much more traumatic things in their life to worry about. For example, my two yr old cousin was just diagnosed with Tay zacs disease and won't live to see 4. Now, what do I do about my 7yr old that wants to succeed thru to state? Or if he was wrestling his last match of his senior yr should I not feel the sadness of missing all the yrs of bonding and time discussing opponents and brackets with him?

I don't think the sad parents who have been living the lifestyle with their kids, supporting their kids, been there thru the injuries and cutting weight, feeling the pain for them when they lose and shaking as they come from behind to win need to be on medicine. Yea, it's for the kids. It builds strong minds and bodies. But, after only 3 yrs of being in it with my son, I want him to succeed, not for me, but for him.

FYI TME08 there are a lot of threads on this website, this one was started over 2 years ago regarding what the emotions of some parents are this time of year. It's a goof thread. There are plenty of heavy topics thru out the thousands of threads on this forum. I suggest you find one of them! Does Miller Lite qualify as medicine?

Last year at subs we were looking really well. We had about a 6 man bracket and we knew we would go to districts. Districts looked pretty promising so we could see state on the horizon. While standing mat side my son was jacking around with his buddies and falls and hits his head againest the corner of a doorway! Instead of going to state we got 4 shinny new staples in the back of his head! We leave the ER and he is like "dad, let's go back! I can beat a few kids and move on!" "Nope son! Its going to be next year for you...."

my son is on his third day in a padded room with healthy room service. wrestling videos are all he can watch for the next 3 days. the practices are fun we keep him in bubble wrap with a helmet on, I think he might be "safe" enough till districts.
