Bontz beat Arias 2-1 instead of getting pinned! My bad.

Wow, what a day! I just got back to the hotel. 2300 wrestlers! I just checked and Track doesn't have the brackets so here are some details.
Our 16 wrestlers went 33-6 today! 15 are still in the tournament and 11 are still on the front side! If the brackets had been seeded correctly we would have more on the front side.
Results:
103 - Parker Howell - 2-1 112 - Hunter Price - 2-1 (Lost 3-2 to the #1 seed) 119 - Bo Newport - 2-0 119 - Alex Garcia - 2-1 125 - Chris Sullivan - 1-2 (Lost on a defensive pin) 135 - Jonathan Blackwell - 2-0 135 - Courtney Strauss - 2-0 152 - Ryne Cokeley - 2-0 152 - Chase Sanchez - 2-0 (Nice OT win) 160 - Drake Lovvorn - 2-0 160 - Kane Kelly - 3-0 171 - Reece Wright-Conklin - 2-0 171 - Taylor Baird - 2-0 189 - Zach Anderson - 3-1 (Lost to #1 seed in first match) 285 - Jesse Trent - 2-0 285 - Eric Mason - 2-0
We have a real shot at the 18U Team Championship trophy. It;s SIX FEET tall!

For the record I'm very impressed with the Team Kansas Results. But this doesn't seem like an event that other states take very seriously. Besides Cadet and Junior Duals, maybe there's an event we can find next year for collegiate style. Not sure there is one? Taking nothing away from the title the boys brought home. I think the organizers did a fantastic job and I appreciaite that. As far a a team stand point can we find something better? Again, to get some of the best Kansas has to offer, was a great effort. And much appreciated. Great Job Team Kansas!

Tim,
For the dual portion of the tournament, I agree. There were still some great matches as is evidenced by our undefeated state champion losing as well as our 4 timer. This was the first year of the HS duals. As for the tournament, the competition is much better. The brackets are a nice size and if Anderson plows through the backside, he will have gotton 9 matches to go with his 4 matches on Friday. We have some awesome match-ups today.
I count this trip a huge success already!

Who did Bontz/Cokeley loose to and how did those matches go? Good luck to our Kansas boys for putting in the extra time and effort to showcase some of our best in a national event.
Hey, Chief, where are you going to put that big trophy?

We have not heard yet about the team results yet but we expect to hear good news about our placement!
We placed 11 wresters in the top 6 and had six in the finals! Arriving in Denver on Thursday night, the team got a workout in at Lindsey Durlacher's gym. The whole weekend was a huge success. Our wrestlers got as many as 13 matches over three days!
At 152, 171 and 285 we had Kansas wrestlers facing each other in the finals. The wrestlers elected to forfeit the matches and head back to Kansas three hours earlier with school starting the next day. We drove back all night and arrived in Kansas City at 4am.
That was a BLAST!
Results:
103 - Hunter Price - 3rd 119 - Bo Newport - 5th 135 - Courtney Strauss - 6th 152 - Ryne Cokeley - 1st 152 - Chase Sanchez - 2nd* 160 - Drake Lovvorn - 4th 171 - Reece Wrigh-Conklin - 1st 171 - Taylor Baird - 3rd** 189 - Zach Anderson - 3rd - Went 8-1! 285 - Jesse Trent - 1st 285 - Eric Mason - 2nd*
*forfeited **forfeited final and lost true 2nd challenge

Glad you posted about this. On our way home I was talking to Reece about the same subject. He had not stepped on the mat since state either. He also pulls zero weight. In my opinion Reece wins 10 out of 10 against Willie. He was never in danger of losing that match. Quality kid but not in Reece's class.

looked to me like a dead even match until schwartzkopf gassed out and quit. good luck to both but to say either was going to win every match isnt even close to reality. they are pretty evenly matched and the best kid on that day won. season or not if you are going to compete be prepared to take your lumps.

Reece is a great young man and took my Freshman son (and the rest of the Frosh class) under his wing, as did all of the LHS upperclassmen. Garrett has a lot of respect for these guys and I am glad that he is grappling with this group of gladiators. Great coaching staff too which makes the transition from Middle School to High School even easier.

I second this statement!
It would be awesome to see the same type of participation and effort to get the participation for the junior and cadet duals. And then see the same kids go to FARGO, as these are the best tournaments you can go to while in high school.

Congrats to Reece! Congrats Reece! Also sounds like the trip was a success and lots of our Kansas wrestlers got a lot of great exposure. Good job giving them this opportunity!
