There is always "it doesnt make sense assignments". 6A has them as well. You have 6 of the 6 schools within 45 min of each other but all 6 of themhave to drive 3-4 hrs to Garden City. Haysville-Campus could drive less than 10 min to Derby..but they going to Garden. There will never be a perfect system. But I think they can come up with a better solution. Esp since every school district is trying to find ways to cut budgets..and the state cutting back funding to schools. Then they state makes more schools travel..in this case in 6A 2 regionlas..they have 6 of the 8 schools traveling multiple hours to another location. When they could have had the 2 schools travel instead of 6. I know if you look through them all I bet there is alot that way.
I don't think it matters if the schools going to a Regional like Garden City reside close to each other as Garden City is assigned the Regional, so it is not Garden's fault that they live 3 plus hours from Wichita. When Colby and Garden City don't host Regionals they will have to travel quite a bit to get where they are going. Every team's idea of a long trip is different too. It is all about perspective. Garden City, Colby, Ulysses, Goodland, Dodge City and other teams like these travel several hours to get to any Regional site unless they are hosting. Other schools travel an hour from one of the major cities in Kansas and feel like they have been screwed over on travel time. Perspective.
That being said, I don't think concerns about budgets apply when we get to Regional time. I am pretty sure most teams would travel across the state as far as they need to (one time for Regionals) if they can get a fair shot at making it to State. The Regionals in 4A look pretty fair this year. I think to alleviate issues, it would be easiest to split up the top 8 teams into the different regionals and then the rest could be set up by actual geography.
