To base a decision like holding back a kid just on the chance of getting a college scholarship is misguided. How many talented and strong athletes are there in Kansas (or if you are talking division I or II-the nation)? How many college scholarships are available? AND if you are lucky to get a college scholarship, what are your chances that you will have a career in that sport after college? Wouldn't it be better if the parent focuses on things like sportsmanship, dedication and hard work that will carry with them for the rest of their lives without having to resort to a "gimmick" like red-shirting?

Plus, just because you are a year older than your classmates does not mean you will be the top athlete (or student). Sometimes it is the kid with the late July birthday with the great work ethic and dedication who achieves all of his goals.

I have never heard of a senior student not get recruited because he was too young.
