since this was poked at on another trhead I figured I would start a new instead of Hijacking one.

When if ever is it ok to not continue on from a illegal slam (that was called and point awarded)

In a tight dual, backside semis to qualify, placement bubke in state, state championship.

I am meaning a slam of technical violation that is called but it appears that the wresler is hurt but far from injured.

It has happened to my son in a tight dual against Minnesota 4 years ago that team KS was winning the dual and he was winning the match and he was call for a BS head but that until the ref called it the kid didn't even know it happened. They laid down and got the win and wrestled the rest of the day.

I told my son and myself I would never ever let him or anyone I coach do that.

With that being said there has been alot of people throw out the "within the rules" phrase in the taunting thread.

This "laying down" is "within the rules" when a wrestler doesn't keep things legal.

Would you look down on a state champion that won state from a illegal slam and probably could have kept going?

For the next month there will be drama aroud this issue and it is easy tting here saying Hel no I wouldn't do that, but it doesn't list state placer or champions as "laid down" for placement.

Thought this might get entertaining and I am bored with the Beeson Soccer battle...lol

I have seen waaaayyy too many Sally's lay down to get the win. On a positive note Scott Coleman from Manhattan was wrestling Steve Mocco at the NCAA tournament. Mocco clearly illegally hurt Coleman, Coleman was a man about it and let 1 second run on the clock and then defaulted. Nobody should ever want to win like this. If it is deliberate and you are truly hurt then OK take the win, but too many coaches tell kids to sit, that is absolutely rediculous.

It is never ok no matter the circumstance. I have personally coached a young man that was denied his shot at state his senior year because a highschool coach told his wrestler to take a dive. This was a kid trying to do a back flip out of a single leg and landed on his head the other coach started crying to the ref that it was an illegal slam and he talked the ref into calling it. I completely lost all respect for this coach and his program and now love to see them lose.

It is funny that yo mentioned that.

We were at our dual last week and one of our wrestlers stood up and tried a standing granby, excecuted it poorly and landed on his head.

The other wrestler didn't have anything to do with the move and was penalized for it. Their coached argued the call but lost the post still. The match wasn't close anyways and we continued and won but it does show how a refs perspective isn't always the best.

Do coaches really tell kids to stay down in this situation? As in “Just stay down for 2 minutes and you’re on to the next round.” Can someone point me to proof that this has absolutely happened to them personally? The reason I ask is that I just wrapped up my 33rd wrestling season (13 as a wrestler & 20 as an official) and I’ve never personally seen this happen. I’m not saying it can’t happen – I can only attend one tournament every Saturday, but given my proximity to the injured wrestler and his coach, one would think that if it’s that common I would have experienced it by now. Like Mr. Peterson said, it’s within the rules, but it is unethical. I suppose you can argue that it’s a proper punishment for the offending wrestler, too. In the end, it’s up to the injured wrestler to make the call. Only he knows his ability to return at 100%.
I also think that it’s entirely possible to be “too incapacitated” to continue the match (after the 2 minute recovery), win by default and return to the mat in the next round and wrestle back at 100%. It all depends on the type of injury.

I personally saw this happen in the 1990 class 5A State Championships Semi-Finals. The wrestler it happened to was a NJCAA 2x National Champion and a NCAA DII 2x National Champion and OW, BUT never a Kansas State Champion.

A couple of years ago our team lost a dual because of a called illegal slam and the opposing wrestler did not continue. That match sent our team to the 3rd/4th place match instead of being in the finals in a dual tournament. The "illegal slam" appeared to be borderline at best and the opposing wrestler, after being down for less than ten seconds, started to get to his feet. All three coaches quickly surrounded him and after a few words he went back down to the mat and eventually it was ruled he couldn't continue

The bad thing was, our wrestler was up 8-0 at the time and was dominating his opponent. Looking back, and at the time, I wish our wrestler would have just taken him down with any number of moves he could have used and finished him off.

I have seen this numerous times. The latest was in the kids division my cousin shoots a deep double leg, the kid bails out and goes to the mat hard. The official rules it a slam. The other coaches go out to the kid and ask him "are you ok" the kid responds "yes" and starts to get up. One of the coaches asked the official "was that legal" the official told him it was a slam. Then all of a sudden the kid is back on the mat injured and can't continue. This is happening at every level unfortunately.

If it is flagrant and with the intent to hurt the other wrestler it is a great rule, but it is way to easy to win a match on a judgment call by an official who has make the call in the heat of the moment.

It's just all about character. Either you have it or you do not. I like to think the personal, one-on-one aspect of wrestling builds character, but we all know that there are individuals, in all walks of life, where its all about "winning" however you define that.

As an official, if the situation seems appropriate, I may remind the coach that his injured wrestler always has the option of defaulting the match at any time rather than taking the win. More than half the time (and there haven't been many to begin with) the coach and kid visit and decide they aren't going to take the victory by that method.
