Why can't we seed the brackets at 6u state? Seed the top 6-8 kids then you can blind draw the rest of them! And don't say it can't be done!
Beeson was right about kids dropping 2 weight classes with the 2lb classes. I seen a few kids that dropped 2 weight classes and even heard a dad bragging about his kid cutting 5lbs. Change them back to what they wrestle every weekend

Change them back to what they wrestle every weekend I am open to handing you the keys but I wonder what the majority would say? The brackets were smaller which was our goal to add weights. The goal was for the greater good not to please everyone as we know that is impossible. I am personally not a firm advocate on 6U wrestling PERIOD but I am not going to fight it. I am not going to toil over seedings and weight loss control enforcement. Focus on making sure you wrestler has fun WRESTLING! Don't make it about winning at 5 or even 12 years old. Make it about fun, learning, socializing, and bonding with you. I promise you that if you are putting pressure on him to the point that only winning is fun he will never make it as a HS wrestler.

If I remember right the Majority voted down the new weights at the state body meeting. I'm not asking you to enforce weight loss control, I'm just asking for you to make it harder to cut down a couple of weight classes. Because you are right, if they are cutting this much weight at 6U they are not enjoying it and will not be good High School wrestlers. If they do make it to High School, they may not be big enough to wrestle 106 because they have cut weight for so long.

I have asked the same about seeding before and now that I have spent more time around kids wrestling and attending seeding meetings as more than just a parent I’m not so sure I am all about it.
1st thing to remember is everyone will never be happy and feelings will get hurt. I agree it should be about fun in kids wrestling but when the whistle blows the competitive nature is going to come out no matter what age it is and fun will take a back seat for a very large majority. As for seeding 377 kids (this year’s numbers) 11 brackets with 17 or more wrestlers, it would probably take around 4 hours to seed that. I don’t think anyone will say it can’t be done but is it necessary? Are coaches going to come to Salina the day before to do it? Do the tournament directors have the time to do it? Many of them have kids in HS which as you know State tournaments are the day before, I wouldn’t ask them to miss that over their own kid wrestling in HS. Also it’s not like a Sub District seeding meeting where you see most the kids in your bracket throughout the year and can establish separation criteria, good luck with that at 6U state.
I guess my opinion is it is 6U go have fun and 8 out of 10 times it will all work itself out without a seeding meeting.…..remember there are zero D1 recruiters at 6U State.
Good Luck

First of all I apologize if you felt like I was attacking you! I agree it's not up to the tournament directors to control weight loss. That should be up to the parents to control and its a shame they feel they have to have their kids cut weight! My son had a blast at the tournament! We went up a day early to have fun swimming and hanging with teammates. The day of the tournament he hung out with his wrestling friends and cheered for them. When he lost to a national/state champ by 1 point the 2nd match of the bracket I picked him up in my arms, hugged him and told him how proud I am of him! My question still wasn't answered tho. Is it because of time, not caring, not thinking these kids battle their butts off all year? And as far as the weight classes I see it both ways
It's all about the kids

What do you guys think about seeding based on their results from trackwrestling events? It would be based on their "rank" shown in their profile. This could be done very quickly (a few seconds more than a draw). Essentially we could define a "seedable" value and then everyone else would be drawn in.
There are possible issues with this approach but want to give more fodder for the discussion. I've tested this on several tournaments and it seemed to do a fair job.
Also, I know there are many that don't like true second but that is used to help with tournaments that do a draw for brackets.

I think that is the most feasable idea for seeding the tournament if that is what you want to do.
As far as true second, I don't think you should differ from what High School State and Kids State does. It will just cause confusion when they head to Kids State. Keep it all the same.

Joe, that is the best, simplest way I see.
I don't really have a problem with no seeding, my son lost first round match by 5, got a forfeit consolation round, then lost by one in the next round. Looking back, he lost to the kid who placed 5th and the kid who placed 6th and has no win to show for it in a 30 man bracket.
Hey, those are the breaks, not really a complaint, just would have like to have my son have a win at state to look at. Now just using it as a platform to get better...

Seeding based on track is an idea…my concerns about that which I didn’t post earlier are how many tournaments are not using it? I know on the east side of the state we only attended 1 tournaments this year that didn’t use it but not sure about the other areas in the state. Also I don’t believe there is a way to differentiate between Novice record and open records and that could be a potential issue.
My other thought was could you run it like a HS seeding meeting minus the actual in person visit. If you set certain criteria for records and such it would auto seed from there and then allow teams to go in and put head to head info that would change a few seeds. The issue with this plan is it potentially opens the door to falsified records and such. Also that would be a strain on club directors.
I do like the thought process with Joe’s potential solution, I also know as many of you do that no matter what you do someone will come on here the week after the tournament and bang on how it’s being ran. I think as adults we have to remember it is 6U and not actually part of the qualifying series. I had a kid compete in it last year and I wanted him to tear it up but when he didn’t it was an oh well dude you did good you have 12 more years of wrestling to get better.

Track is not the way to seed. Many kids look better or worse due to what tournaments they go to. Why not do something simple like only seed retuning 6u state placers. That would keep top kids off same side in many cases. Also very easy to verify for those who over rate their kids. No meeting needed. Just an idea.

Just an idea...that's what is under discussion so glad to hear it. I think seeding based on the past tourney results is viable.
This rating can be set/verified by using the "Event Qualification" function in track for your separation criteria.
For example for next year we could establish the following:
6U Champ (System Qualification = 1st place at 2014,2013) 6U Placer (System Qualification = 2,3,4,5 place at 2014,2013 ) C-The rest
What do you guys think of that? Could even add another track tourney as a qualifier as well. Salina I've heard mentioned.

I think that looks good Joe. Inmost brackets I see maybe two kids that we want to keep off the same side. All I would like to see is the best 2 in the finals. No need to have a meeting. A few people can look at prior year and try to separate top kids.
Thanks Matt Blancarte

What about Salina tournament, Maize battle for belt, if you look at those two tournaments, it will give you a good idea of who is good that year. Some times past state placers are not as good the next year, look at 4a high school state, for example. this is just my opinion, but what do I know.

Joe- I think your idea on using Track is the best option.. Not all 6U kids travel to the bigger tournaments and not all tournaments use Track to get a real picture on the kid but at least you would have some type of idea how they have been doing. I also feel that kids should have to wrestle the weight bracket they have been all year at 6U state.

That is Crazy talk. If your not pulling down at least two weight classes your not really serious about the sport. State Championships are won in the Sauna, in the gym with plastics, and as far from the dinner table as possible. Come on people, if the kid is not serious by 6 they never will be ready for this sport. ;-)

Agreed! Finally someone with some sense. My 6 year old walks around 51 but for the big show. 43!! Go small or don't go.
