Fair enough Bruce. I guess what I'm debating is something totally different. In having a conversation with one of your coaches, he stated that 90% of the kids wrestling for the Young Guns would wrestle for Goddard. I have that number more around 75% which is still pretty good.

And I suppose this is a club of many schools not just Goddard. It is making many wrestlers better, and that is a good thing.

Without actually looking at each address for all of the wrestlers, I would have to agree that percentage is closer to 90%. I know firsthand that a majority of those kids live in the Goddard school district and will attend one of the two high schools.

I'm sticking with 75%. Wichita West, Maize South, Mulvane, Bishop Carrol, Wichita Northwest, Ferdonia, Andale, Maize, and Haysville are just a couple of the schools that will have wrestlers from Kansas Young Guns. That is 9 kids which puts you at 85%. Some of those I named have multiple siblings. If I take the 16 I stated the first time that would put you at about 74%. Like I said, that is still a pretty good percentage.

Track wrestling must be wrong....they show 8 out of top 25 were not with yg for the last 12 months.

Really what is the big deal. So Young Guns won the team title, so kids travel to wrestle in there room. Isn't the real thing to remember here is its the kids and not how many parents are mad there team didn't win. I will remember this year because my oldest son finally qualified for state after missing out for 9 years. Not who won the team title, not to take anything away from KYG congratulations coaches and kids. But my son was the star of the weekend for me even going two and BBQ not the team race.

As far as how many wrestle for Goddard High School... Of the 13 that were entered as High School Division for YG... 6 Wrestle for Goddard, 1 for Wichita West, 1 for Maize South, 1 for Wichita Northwest, 1 for Maize, 1 for Clearwater, and 2 for Mulvane. That is all according to Trackwrestling. If YG are developing these kids for all these other schools then I say congrats and great job. But if that is true then why did 2 of them wrestle for Hard Knox last year, 1 for Haysville, 2 for Maize...ect....

High schoolers wrestling for, whatever team it may be, move clubs. They are looking for partners. Living in the Wichita area/Kansas City area, gives them options. I would say 50% of HS wrestlers don't do kids state. So partners are hard to come by. The CORE of KYG are kids who WILL wrestle for Goddard or close by high schools. Every year things change. Clubs fold under, parents don't like the coach, partners are hard to come by, whatever the situation. No club is exempt to this, no matter where you live. Parents will put in there drive time, hoping to make their kid better. Will they wrestle for Goddard, NO, but will it push them to be better, on a high school level, YES. Now each kid that comes out of a practice room no matter where you live, at some point will have to wrestle your ex-team mate on a high school level,(JV or Varsity). As coaches this should be ALL our goals, putting our kids club kids on ANY varsity high school program.

I want to thank the KYG wrestlers, parents, coaches and supporters for all of your hard work and efforts. I also want to thank those of you with positive comments. You guys are great and I love working with you. I also want to thank ALL the other teams across the entire state for your hard work and efforts, because without ALL of us, then NONE of us could accomplish what we do.

It's been a great but challenging road. 5 years ago my best friend, coach Terry Lange and I started out with 12 wrestlers in my back yard wrestling room, a facility in which the majority of it we built ourselves. We still practice in this room from time to time and the memories are awesome.

None of this is about me, the parents, our coaches, etc....it's about the kids and that is what motivates us. My main focus IS NOT team titles, but it is something that can happen if the cards fall correctly.

Therefore, I want to congratulate the 40 of 60 KYG State placers. Of the 20 KYG kids that made the finals, 16 of them are enrolled in a Goddard School. Of the 40 of 60 that placed, over 70% are enrolled in a Goddard School. I state this because it appears that some people think our team is primarily composed of "out of town" or "far-far away" wrestlers.

I also want to thank Ryan Jilka, principal of the Goddard Elementary school that allows us to practice in his facility....Ryan is a great guy.

Just a though not intended to change a thing. I have always thought the way kid state did it was odd as far as teem points. It would only make it more interesting if you had more than 1,2, or 3 teams with a chance to win it all. Glad I could get some of you fired up.

That Ferdonia kid lives in Clearwater.

Just to let everyone know, my two boys are indeed from Clearwater and one of them is a high schooler previously mentioned. We started wrestling for young guns 3 years ago when we indeed practice in a shed in the back of Coach Max's Yard. We went to Young guns because of the work ethic and standards that these coaches taught in the room. I can tell you personally that this was never intended to be a recruiting game in order to win a KIDS state title. It was understood in the beginning that the goal was to develop an awesome group of wrestlers. Although we do not live in Goddard, this group of parents and coaches have never batted an eye at coaching my son. They know that they are developing my kids for the Clearwater High School team and they don't care. They care about two things and two things only....Developing good
kids....and developing good wrestlers!! They teach that hard work, dedication, and determination pay off in the end both on and off the mat. They teach the kids to never give up! These coaches, parents, and kids are a truly amazing group. Anyone who wants to know why these kids have chosen to drive out of town to practice for this team needs to step inside their practice room...it doesn't take long to see why people love the Kansas Young Guns! Congrats to all the KYG coaches, wrestlers, and parents on all of their accomplishments this year as they all deserve it!!

you can get to goddard in 20 to 25 minutes or less from any side of Wichita and most surrounding towns. we live in between goddard and maize, with bishop carrol within walking distance. my highschooler chose young guns because of the quality wrestling partners and top notch coaches. if you lived this close to an awesome club I bet you would choose what was best for your son too! how far is to far to travel to join a team without people thinking its unfair?

what if we did this. what if we had an elite club category and then just a regular club category for state. you would have to clarify at the beginning of the season which you are in or in maybe the young guns case they could have one in each. there is no perfect way to do this but maybe you select your top 20-30 kids that qualify for state for team points and in young guns case they could take the top 30 then the rest of the kids would go for the regular club points. might as well do it just like 4a high school in football. 2 seperate classes. now that would give the young guns a chance to win 2 seperate trophys and im sure there would be some complaints if that happened but hey life isnt fair sometimes and you just have to deal with the cards your dealt. so this is just and idea i came up with. have a good off season as im in full baseball mode right now and will see you all next fall.

Making another class is not the answer. That just waters it down.

I was kinda suprised at no "roar" when they announced the state title. I have a small club but every time my kids won a match, my parents were loud. Kids club is about the family you grow up with. My best memories are time with my team/brothers. As kids won state titles from yg, you heard a couple of people cheer. Id rather place a few who know each other then win a title with strangers. Just my thoughts. Congrats to Young Guns anyhow.
