Saw this in the Wichita Eagle this morning. Established by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Just wondering what the wrestling community thought. Not saying it's a bad idea, but seems like it would be awfully hard to monitor. Especially on a week to week basis.
"Starting in 2006-07 wrestlers may not lose more than 1.5 percent of their weight per week and must maintain body fat of at least 7 percent for boys and 12 percent for girls. Also, their weight-loss plans must be monitored weekly by the schools."

This is going to be quite a change as it means that for instance you can't come in on Monday at 150 lbs and expect to cut to 145 by Thurs. cause if I understand it right -- if you may only cut the 1.5% per week, the federation deems you can only cut (1.5% of 150 lbs) or 2.25 lbs that week. High School wrestlers and coaches know that it is not at all unordinary to be able to lose 2.5 to 3 lbs. in a single practice.

Wouldn't this now have to be adopted by the KSHSAA to effect Kansas wrestling? They may choose to adopt all, parts or none of the recommendation?

The KSHSAA will not adopt this weight loss rule, they did not adopt the last weight management rule the NFHS adopted.
The KSHSAA is developing their own weight loss rules that will be piloted by about 17 schools in the state to gather data next season and will probably go in to effect during the 06-07 season. From what I understand it involves a hydration test prior to the season and a body fat test prior to the season. It also involves a hydration test around certification time as well. There are probably more details that I am unaware of, but those are the basics.
Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn- and most do.
