5A top 10 Turner, Bishop Carroll, Ark City, Shawnee Heights, Campus, Blue Valley, Salina South, Valley Center, Kapaun, Paola
Name 10 teams in 3A better than this. Name 5 teams in 3A better than Turner, BC, Ark City, Campus and Shawnee Heights and one of them better not beat Hoxie because Shawnee Heights has already beaten them. Valley Center placed ahead of them as well.

Of course 5A teams should be able to field a whole team, whereas 3A will usually have opens

Not all 5A's are better then 3A's. All we need to do is look at the Newton tourny. Norton came away with the title there. Not saying they are the best, but not to shabby if you can go into the Newton tourny and win it all. Also, a few years ago, ACCHS was awesome, and won the Bobcat a couple years in a row if I believe right.

Maybe we should start a new post. Someone though on this topic basically made the statement that 5A is not as good as 3A which is absolutely not true and the comment must be addressed. Most would say the same about 5A vs. 4A. 10-20 years ago that was the case but not anymore and the results of matchups over the last 10 years verify this. For me, it doesn't matter who beat who individually or as a team unless they beat them at state. But because of the classes, we can only determine who is the best within a class and not between classes. But everyone keeps saying this or that class is better and the only thing that you have to go on is matchups throughout the year. I am tired of people crapping on 5A but I should just let it go. If you look at the matchups this year, based on that, 5A is as tough as any class. I provided a small portion of info that validates my claim but the response show that it was unread. No question, Norton might be the best team in the state but no way does that make 3A the best class. Turner won Bobcat and I do not hear anything about 5A being good. Carroll was barely 2nd to Norton at Newton and won it last year over Norton and I do not hear anything about 5A. Ark City won Derby, same story. Ark City beat Goddard who beat mighty Abilene at the Emporia tounament and same story. Even a not so thought of team like Seaman barely lost to Abilene taking third at Emporia. The list goes on and on Valley Center has beat Colby, Shawnee Heights has beat Hoxie, Carroll beat Clay Center, etc., etc., etc. Results speak not smack talk.

WSEWC- My position on the class match up takes a different perspective than yours. I look at what it takes to qualify/place at state, maybe not where the best few teams are. If I were a mediocre (sorry if this is spelled incorrectly, I hope the grammar police doesn't arrest me!) wrestler and I wanted a chance to qualify and/or place at state, 5A is the place to do that most years. There are more losing records at state in 5A than any other class. And I don't believe that they have losing records because of all the tough duals they have with other tough 5A schools, very few teams wrestle a lot of duals anymore, unless it is a dual tourney in which case you are probably not just wrestling 5A schools. Also, wrestlers from smaller schools records are not inflated due to a large number of forfeits in duals, the way Kansas wrestling is now, most teams see numerous teams from other classes throughout the course of the year. While I understand 5A has many of the best teams in the state this year, I define "easy" or "worse" differently than you do. Under my definition I would definitely have to say 4A or 321A is the toughtest.
Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn- and most do.

4a and 3a have more depth but 5a and 6a also have outstanding wrestlers in some tough weight classes there is no way to tell which class is the best

I think I've figured out your anonymity, Mr. Flintstone. And if you are who I think you are, you have never even attended the 4A state tournament. I haven't either, but I can't say that I disagree with you (in recent years anyway).

32 teams in 5a, and 6a.. half of the guys that make any varsity program will go to state, and a 1 in 6 will win a medal. when it comes state tourney time take a look at the brackets in 4a and 123a. 5a and 6a are short enough in number that it would be practical to have only a state tournament-- a 32 berth bracket and winner take all. 4a and 321 would be too big to do that. with all the talk about school activity budgets, and talk about consolidation and all, that would save a lot of money and would certainly add some excitement to the bigger class events. but numberwise, your percentages get tougher as you go down in class.

Here in Illinois there are only two classes! Makes the competition much tougher.

Parity in wrestling varies from year to year period. Don't forget, 5 and 6A schools have larger numbers to choose their best 14 from. I think it's fair to say that jv wrestlers from some of the long-standing powerhouse teams (whether it's Norton or Salina or Ark City, etc) can beat varsity wrestlers from some of the weaker teams. So just because 5 and 6A only have 32 teams doesn't mean much. Their daily practices could be tougher than a lot of duals in the lower classifications. My money is always on a school with big tradition. Regardless of size, their local heritage makes it important to be good---and that goes a long way.
