I hate that this incident occurred. I have a great deal of respect for Daniel. I had the honor of being in his corner, last year at kids’ state, and know that while Daniel may wrestle tough, I have seen few kids work as hard in the room and out as Daniel, and the bottom line is he is a fine young man. One of the things to remember is that for Daniel who has always shown class, this was his last high school tournament, and last chance at state.

Coach Ross is a class coach who my son will hopefully wrestle for and I know that neither would he condone any form of unsportsmanlike conduct or support willful injury to another athlete. All of this said, rules are rules and if anything I believe, shows one of the benefits of summer wrestling, Greco or Freestyle. There are ways to hit the throws (slams) but knowing how to land them (for the thrower) is rather important and those are techniques that are generally learned in the Spring of the year.

Daniel, if you get bored and want to wrestle, come on to the kids room and help coach, I'll let you take out a few frustrations on me when demonstrating things for the kids. I know the kids look up to you in the practice room and you will continue to be respected by me.

Coach Steiger, your comments show class and I hope that Wilcox is doing okay.

There is no rule to my knowledge that disallows a coach or kid that is hurt from a illegal move to restart the match and then default out allowing the other wrestler to continue on. It is a tough call to decide when someone blatantly and intentionally is trying to hurt someone. The unfortunate situations are when a highly superior kid accidently injures his opponent with an illegal move and the situation is taken advantage of. This is where the character of the kid and coach are in hand. I have no idea how one could allow themself our their wrestler to pull such an act. What was the onsight medical staffs take on the Dykstra injury during the Baker match? Hard to believe a cross face caused that much damage. If it was that blatant of a swinging crossface I guess the official could have totatlly booted Baker... boy would have that caused a riot.. ahh no Ref would have the nerve to make that kind of call against a western kid, and then expect to be back at Hays...

tksnkc,

bu rule the coach of a wrestler may forfeit his wrestler anytime during the match, this however does not extend into injury time for illegal moves. In this case the paramedic determined he could not continue and therefore the match could not be started again for his coach to forfeit this match.

Sorry Nigel but you don't know what you are talking about in the Baker DQ. He was called for an illegal crossface but even that was questionable. Dykstra's coaches were screaming about every crossface in that match. They finally got the call they wanted. No medical personnel were ever called onto the mat to exam Dyktra, there was no blood no nothing, just a very good acting job on the part of the parties involved. And when I said questionable crossface the local ABC station KLBY who covered the matches live showed it over and over on TV both friday and saturday and the crossface actually landed on the top of Dyktra's forehead not his mouth where his supposed injury was. Both of the coaches I believe lost their jobs coaching and both have had other "problems" in their backgrounds.

I think we should go to freestyle and greco rules. If a kid get slammed so what, its part of the sport. Thats why we dont play basketball. I dont know anyone that would go out there to try and hurt someone on purpose. But i dont think the wrestler should be punished for being aggresive.

Ogre i was not saying that i think less of wilcox its just that when you have a situation like that it is sometimes better to let the better wrestler go Smith was winning to my knowledge i may be wrong because i was wrestling on the oppostie match and no doubt it was illegal but wilcox is not an outstanding wrestler and i do congratulate him on qualifying and wish him luck but smith was and is definatley the better wrestler. As to the Derby crowd i feel for them i know how that feels being on the manhattan crowd when our nameless 152lbr last year got dq'd from his first round match and ended up going 0-2

Not Too Bad so your telling me that you don't know anyone that would win at all costs. Your sadly mistaken if you believe that no one would try to hurt someone just to win. So should we make the west point ride legal and why not just make it a kick boxing match. Most the kids that do freestyle and greco are very experienced from folkstyle and are the best wrestlers that come through the state. Face it there is many inexperienced wrestlers in the state that aren't very smart but are very strong; if we allowed them to slam people without knowing the proper technique to bring someone down, we would have some serious injuries.

sab I wasn't speaking about 1 particular match, only a situation mentioned earlier. I don't know anything about the baker match so I can't comment on what was to happen in it. I was mearly saying that as an official the situation I described it what has to happen. I was refering to a situation ealier when someone mentioned a wrestler's coach should have forfetied him.

What makes you think that Jamel will beat me? He has a 6-15 record on varsity and has gotten beat by many of the kids that i have beat. I placed higher than he did at League too and i made it farther at your own tournament than he did he went 0-2. I'm friends with wilcox and i don't have a problem with him but you saying that Smith would whip the crap outta me is obviously an uneducated answer considering that i beat him 5-1 at newton and took 4th at newton. And as far as being on the same side i welcome it i hope i do have to wrestle him just so i can embarrass Junction City once more
