Layton has not been mentioned at all in being one of the best in Kansas history. He was a four timer who could have went anywhere but chose to go to Notre Dame to wrestle and earn a degree that guarantees success.

One of the best heavyweight matches I have ever seen was back in 1988 when we had the old Kansas vs. Nebraska exchange dual. Our heavyweight was Joe Nelson, Wichita South,(I hope that name is correct, memories fade as we progress in years. Isn't that right Westphal?) and theirs was an eventual lineman for the Huskers (his name escapes me). This was a classic match between speed and quickness, Nelson, vs. size and strength. Not that Nelson wasn't strong, but he probably went 220-225 and the Nebr. kid was every bit of 285, plus a head taller. These two went at it with the eventual score being something like 18-16. Neither was going to get pinned, even though each was on his back a couple of times. It was a Classic.

Doug -
I was fortunate enough to wrestle for Team Kansas in that dual and you are exactly right - that was a great match. Wichita wrestler was Lance Nelson and the Nebraska kid was Kevin Raemakers (sp?). Final score of the match was 14-12 in favor of Nelson.
While we easily won the dual (41-10), its probably a good thing we did not play them in football. Raemakers played quite a bit of ball for Nebraska and my match in that dual was against Quentin Neuhjar (sp?) who went on to star for K-State and eventually became the starting center for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Doug; Yes my memory is fading for sure along with everything else. They should give us a card that explains that ahead of time so we would expect it. How bout that comercial for Notre Dame and the degree that promises success. I thought that degree was Emporia State. Go figure...

I thought I might throw out some good match ups..
1965 Johnson vs. McDougal 1969 Faulkender vs. Hornung 1973 Pope vs. Duell 1975 Alstrom vs. Witherspoon 1981 or 82 Douglas vs. Koehler Mid 80s DeLeon vs. Richards There have been many good matches and I apologize for spelling and mistaken dates.. but it certainly has kept us entertained.
... the world will little note, nor long remember what we said here, but it should never forget what they did here...

Hi Ray; yep I like all those and it dates me that I saw most of them *Laugh*. What made the last falkender match with horning special was that falkender had a separated shoulder I think for much of that match and won anyway in the finals of regionals and then could not wrestle in the state tourney or he would have been a four timer. Boy they were both tough weren't they. The reason the Lowry - Lampe match keeps coming to my mind is that Lowry had upset Lampe in the regionals by a big score and he had lost a bunch of times to Steve in a row. Then the next week Lampe came back and got after him in the finals of state by about the same score. I am not sure but I don't think Lowry ever won a state championship and I think most of that was because of Lampe. My memory might be fuzzy about that but it seems like it went that way.

A great match I saw was when Lance Shepard from Hoxie defeat Wes Harding in Wes' final high school match to keep him from become a four time champ.

Back in the sixtys I saw a guy from Colby (Barker I think) beat one of the Treasner brothers from Garden City in the finals of the Garden City Tourney (1967) They were both state champions and Barker took him down and let him up for the win in a great match. That was a great tourney in those days and it was a tremendous match with a full house watching between really good ones. I believe they both ended up being state champs eventually.

Westfahl; I think that kid from Colby's name was Gary Barton that beat Leon Treasner of Garden City if memory serves me.

I've had the pleasure of sitting in the corner of several great matches over the years and watched many more from the early 60's on. The Drake Canfield match which was mentioned earlier was a great one to watch. More of a chess match than a battle, but exciting non the less. My all time favorite was at the 1975 State semi-finals between Beloits David Gantenbein and my yourger brother David Alley who wrestled for Douglass. I beleive they both entered the match undefeated and both figured this was, in reality, the finals. The match was constant motion with points being scored in multiples. Both wrestlers scored from various situations and each placed their opponent on their back. Alley narrowly escaped with a last second reversal and I believe it was an 18-17 match. I remember Ron Bauman the official stating it was one of his best matches to ever watch.

Terry, I completely forgot about that match and it was a great one. I will also never forget your brother singing T for Texas on the loudspeaker between rounds. That was a great match for sure and it definitely was the finals.

When I was a youngster from Atwood my wrestling hero was Regan Erickson because of his final high school match. He wrestled in the state championship against a kid from Osborne. Erickson was down by one and they went out of bounds with 1 second on the clock. Erickson stood up and faced him and was awarded the escape to put the match into OT. Erickson went on to win pretty easily in OT. That still gives me chills.

Id say one of the best matches in the last 5 years was when Blake Pilkington of Oakley took Kevin Hadley of P-Burg down in like the last two seconds of the state final match to win. Prior to this match Hadley was undefeated and hadnt been taken down all year.
