The score on Cornejo and Grater did not show much, the official Mark Richards won. Grater stalled and tried to stay away for Joe. Not to mention that on the 2 pt takedown ther was no control.

It was a good tournament this year. Pretty even team race with the title coming down to an overtime heavyweight match, which I might add was pretty good.

Mr. Fairleigh, You express a rather condescending attitude . Norton and NW Kansas has had statewide respect in wrestling for a long time and winning the Newton Tournament is a big accomplishment for ANY school, regardless of size.

Where did Hat Town finish? Who were the top five teams? Did Coach Andrade yell at anyone for not cleaning up their trash at dinner? (I've never been so scared...)

No disrespect meant, Mr. Egg. I Remember many of the Norton teams of the late 1960's and early 70's, knew several of those guys personally. My point was that , to the best of my knowlege, this is the first time I can think of that the Bluejays went head to head with most of the best 5 and 6 a teams in the state and beat them. That has in my view laid a lot of "what ifs", or, "if there was a grand state" talk to rest. Many of us have respected Norton for years, now many of the people that did not think they could wrestle with the larger schools have gained respect for them.

Hat Town finised in eighth (8th) place behind a 3A school, a 4A school, three 5A schools, an Oklahoma team, and a 6A team.
Which school classification is it that Prant Garker is always denegrading?

If I misread your oringinal post on this subject, I apologize.
"My point was that , to the best of my knowlege, this is the first time I can think of that the Bluejays went head to head with most of the best 5 and 6 a teams in the state and beat them. " Mike Fairleigh
Norton has been going head to head with the best wrestling teams in the state for a long time (as has St. Francis, Oberlin, Hoxie, Goodland, Oakley, Colby, Atwood, etc. etc.).
". . .many of the people that did not think they could wrestle with the larger schools have gained respect for them. " Mike Firleigh
This is the fourth year that Norton has attended this tournament and if memory serves me right (and it does fail from time to time) the BlueJays have not finished lower than 6th or 7th (year 1) and this is the third year that a trophy has been earned at the TOC. Shouldn't some some sort of respect been generated by now?
These people whose respect may have been earned with this championship are obviously ignorant about Kansas wrestling--its history, tradition, and strengths. Many of these people are excessively egocentric and believe that the size of school attended either bewtows or removes athletic attributes..
If the Norton victory did anything to dispel that idea, great! My guess is that these same people will be putting some kind of spin on this victory soon.

Part of the strength of wrestling in NW Kansas is the heritage of the sport which has been passed on from father to son for decades.
I have the utmost respect for wrestling in NW Kansas and believe a large part of the success in South central Kansas is a direct result of successful athletes from NW Kansas who migrated to South central Kansas for their high school coaching careers. Three names immediately come to mind, Lyle Neville, C. Dee Gard, and Gus Garcia.

Which school classification is it that Prant Garker is always denegrading? What is that last word? Also Perry, OK is class 2a in Oklahoma and has a spot in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, it's also the town where Mr. Dan Hodge resides.

I saw the Cornejo vs. Grater match in a different light than a previous post. I did not see Grater stalling anymore than Cornejo. Neither wrestler was very agreesive on their feet as far as shooting takedowns. Both were content to tie up and look for an opening. A few half shots and ankle pick attempts was all either wrestler really tried. Grater's 1st takedown was legit, however Cornejo did escape quickly. Grater did attemp to shuck or drag Cornejo by several times and scored his 1st TD via this move. Cornejo never really went after Grater until the very end when it was do or die. Not alot of fireworks, but tough battle between 2 of Kansas best. Grater looked to be the quickest of the 2 on their feet. I would like to see a re-match at the Senior Classic. Might a more exciting match next time around.
