Does anybody else think weishaar got screwed. How can a ref call stalling when he is on top in double overtime. I have never heard of such a think. And strait went on to win, while weishaar goes to the consolation and destroys everyone down there. Well i was just wondering what everyone else thought about this.

you can't just stall if you're on top in double over-time either. granted i didn't see the match though.

I agree.....they need to re-think the stalling calls....Ryan Augustine got hosed with stalling too. He lost the 171 title because of bogus stalling calls..
Come on refs!!!!! Let them wrestle!!!

Correction " Keith " you can be called for stalling on top in double overtime.

This is an except from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) the governing body for Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) which assigns officials and makes the rules....

Q: I witnessed a referee call stalling on the top man in double overtime. I thought the purpose of the top man was to hold his opponent down for 30 seconds. What is the call.
A: If a wrestler is blatantly stalling in the 30-second tiebreaker, instead of just riding, the official can indicate stalling.

Yes indeed you can be called for stalling if for example you hook the opponents leg with yours, we call it "K-Stating" the leg in Abilene- but then al you do is hold on to one part of their body then you are stalling.

On a side note: the bottom wrestler can be called for stalling too however it is never called becuase the referee knows that the wrestler will lose anyway if they contiunue to stall.

Well " Nigel " I didn't mean that he can't call stalling cause he obviously can so i'm sorry about that, but from what i hear Weishaar was riding Strait and not just laying on top of him which would result in stalling. I wasn't there to see the match but i've heard this from multiple people, including other wrestlers that said it shouldn't have been a stalling call.

Ok point well taken. I just thought for a minute that you were taking credit away from Jacob, who is a very excellent wrestler. I am happy that he won his third championship, regarless of how he got it done.

Oh i'm definitly not taking credit away from Strait. He is obviously a great wrestler to win three years in a row. I just wonder if the outcome would have been different if he wasn't already a two time state champ. I'm sure that the ref called what he thought is right, but i watch alot of basketball games too and i dont' think that most of those refs should be aloud to watch basketball let alone referee it. I have noticed that the states wrestling officials do a much better job from the matches i've seen, but for some reason that stalling call doesn't make much since if he was riding him. And i do have one other question that i'm not sure about. How long do you have stall to get called for stalling? A few secords or like 20-25.

well there is not really a set amount of time it takes to get a stalling call. quite frankly and as I intrepret the rule, any wrestler who purposly tries to stop the flow of action in a match is stalling. So for instance if a wrestler backs away from his opponent in neutral position then he could be stalling. This doesn't happen very often in the early part of the match becuase the referee considers this to be "feeling out your opponnent" however as an official if I see a wrestler moving away from the opponet then im going to call stalling. So the answer to your question is technically you could be called for stalling 10 seconds into a match if you blatenly try to stop the flow.

I think that using screwed it the wrong word for this topic and i apologize for that. But as far as i know, Weishaar wasn't warned and he was on top riding Strait. That matches that i've watched jake wrestle this year he hasn't stalled once.

Jake Weishaar is from Atchison, not Atwood.

i was 2 feet away from the mat at the time and all weishaar did was drop to the leg everytime strait stood up and it's not like he tried to go to anything else. and also when he was on that leg while strait was trying to get away he was just laying there on it, not doing anything with it. it basically seemed like a judgment call by the referee and it's one of them calls that happen. maybe he (the ref) viewed it totally different than everyone.

Well i dont know exactly what happened, but other wrestlers said that strait wasn't doing anything to try and get away. Plus Strait tried fleeing the mat, isn't that a penalty?

I couldn't agree more with "someoldguy". All Weishaar did was drop to a leg - in fact that's what his coach told him to do if you listened. WHen Strait stood up he wanted him just to try to "hold on". That's not wrestling - that's exactly what Isom was talking about, he was "stopping the flow of wrestling".

And Keith, do you not think Strait would have not tore through the consolation side also. I actually felt sorry for the guy that Strait wrestled in Beloit after he lost.

I think Strait made a clear statement in the semi's when he pinned Norris in the 1st period.

BTW..congrats to the Abilene Cowboys! Well earned.

By the Way Sayler,

You were watching that match while you were at the table across from it working? That explains why there was occasionally trouble on Mat #3. There certainly wasn't any "down time" because they kept the matches rolling.

I'm sure strait would have gone through the consolations easy too, but why would a guy working that table during that match say that strait was trying to flee the mat, if he actually wasn't.

I watched the match and I thought it should have been a no-call. Weishaar was just holding on to the legs while Strait was trying just to crawl off the mat. A no-call would have been best in this situation.

Trying to flee the mat isn't a violation. I saw that match and I think he got called for stalling because of cumulative moves to the same leg and no attempt to move up or take his opponent to the mat. The ref that called that match is one of the best young officials in the state and had an impressive state tourney and that call was a gutsy one but in my view, a good one. I at first thought it was called on Strait and I would have thought and did think at the time that it should have been the other way around. He didn't get jammed though it is just one of those things, he tried to get rid of some time by staying down low on the leg and that is stalling. It happens and sometimes it doesnt get called but this time a good young official did his job. Sometimes thats not popular with everyone though.

What I meant at the top of that post was that the stalling occurred before any actual fleeing of the mat took place. Just trying is not a deal you have to actually go out of bounds and when a guy is dropped down on one leg and you are trying to pull away the only way you can go is away and that happened to be to the boundry. You aren't going to get called often for that when his is down low on the leg.
