One of the problems with college wrestling are coaches like Ersland at CMSU. He burned Jeremy Long, as he did my son from the same recruiting class. Wrestling becomes a 40-50 hr/week job, 7 days a week starting in August. The NCAA rules are broken and if the wrestler doesn't show up for a voluntary run at 6:30am he gets to sit out a tournament(s). My son walked away when Ersland demanded he drop an evening course in his major that didn't interfer with scheduled practices. He was his school's first 4x state qualifier, in the regional finals 4x, winning 2x and a 3x state placer. Not quite D1 quality. He was competing with national D2 placers from CMSU just fine, as was Jeremy, but it wasn't worth the lack of a college education, experience and satisfaction.
