The debate is not dead although it should be.
I want the debate to go away as much as anyone because there should be no debate. Times have changed and 5A and 6A no longer take a back seat to 3A and 4A. The reason that it is not dead and decaying is because 4A and 3A advocates keep bringing it up.
There are a lot of great coaches that don't make some great kid's state champions including there own kids and Salyer's kids must know how to wrestle. How else could one of them be a regional runner-up in a MIGHTY 4A regional tournament?
And no you do not have to wrestle to be knowledgeable. One of the greatest coaches of all time if not the greatest coach of all time did not wrestle. Ed Gallagher led OSU to 11 national titles in 13 attempts. He was an Olympic Coach at the Berlin Games. He built the program at OSU. He played football and ran track in college and did not wrestle because there was no wrestling at OSU until he built the program after he graduated.
We now see that some of you, but I will not name you, are not only mean spirited but dead wrong.

I bet you anything he learned from someone, no way sahpe or form, did he just magically start teaching a double leg and all the counters and all the other moves. He had to learn from someone. Are you also implying that because you showed me one example, I should believe you? Is Richard D. Salyer the next Ed Gallagher? Give me a break.

He qualified one year, coming from this god of knowledge you'd think would have qualified more than one occasion.

We now see that some of you, but I will not name you, are not only mean spirited but dead wrong.

Go ahead and name me, Alex Ryan, go ahead. I will stand by my belief that not only was he not correct in some statements, he's nothing more than a spectator or table worker a kid's State Tournment.

From a very reliable source, and respected I may add, Several of you know this person well and have seen his work. "From what I've been told around here, Richard NEVER wrestled in Kids, JH or HS. He's never coached or reffed.
Simply sat in the stands and criticized..."

Sounds like the kind of guy I'd want teaching me and my teammates. He could have my coaches job if he wanted it, no matter what. Sounds like a real nice guy who's very full of himself.

Wow, ouch.
I do not know about all that, but as far as Ed Gallagher goes, you are wrong because he did just start "magically" teaching it.... He learned from no one.... He had an engineering degree and used his knowledge of stress and leverage to create over a hundred moves and holds. He created most of the moves that OSU used at the time (keep in mind, this was back in the twenties and thirties) and he created a great percent of the moves that are used in America today. That is why OSU was so dominate at the time. That is why he was in the first class to be inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame. That is why he was voted greatest coach of the first half of the century with Gable claiming the second half. That is why he was voted second most influencial person in America ever in wrestling behind Gable. That is why he was the first president of USA Wrestling. That is why the OSU Fieldhouse is named after him. Etc. Etc. Etc. That is why he is in Ripley's Believe It Or Not. But you do not have to believe me. Check it out for yourself. Go onto Google or Yahoo or whatever and type in Ed Gallagher and see what you get. Call OSU or the National Wrestling Hall Of Fame.
I do not know why you are so angry. I certainly did not want to anger you, that is why I left no names. I do not operate by insulting others. It does not make me feel better. And I certainly was not talking about just you but anyone who gets on the forum and blasts others who care about wrestling. I hope that you are not offended and I hope that you have a great day.

Hey Guys, WSEWC is right about Ed Gallagher. Many consider him second to none, including Gable regarding his influence in the sport. I didn't realize this until this last year but I think Coach Lemon is a grandson or something like that of Gallagher, that is like being related to George Washington or something as far as I am concerned. I will also say this about Gallagher, he always claimed to be from Kansas, and in fact was from Kansas, although he only lived here for a short time. This goes back to the little question about why he is not in our Hall of Fame. I will disagree with some here and that is okay, but Coach Gallagher was all of that including a MAJOR INFLUENCE ON THE SPORT OF WRESTLING IF NOT THE MAJOR INFLUENCE.

By the way Bronco, while I find validity in some of your points here, I am reminded that Mother Theresa never had leprosy but she sure made a difference to the people of Calcutta India and the rest of the world. Don't fall into the trap that just cause one hasn't means they can't.
