I think starting early and counting calories is a great way to lose weight. If you knew me in high school I don't sound like the same guy. I counted calories and and boosted my water intake and in 3 1/2 weeks I lost 22 pounds. I also felt great

I started at 185 and got down to 163. I just did regular work out and ate between 1700-2000 calories. I also drank around a gallon water a day. I also cut almost all coarse sugar out of my diet(i.e. pop, candy, most desserts). Not having empty calories in your diet is a big part of it.

Ahh who needs to eat in the course of the day, J.C you know how I always did it sweating off about 7 pounds a day in practice, back when we were allowed to have our nice warm room, then it went down to about 4 a day since we had to practice with a fan

Nigel, The only reason I tried this approach is had the time and I can't afford to not eat being a pilot. The good old days of the oven we practiced in are gone and staying light in off season will become more of a factor as rules on weight tighten. You should try being a college "coach" and certifying a team I reccommend staying down to weight in the off season if possible. I am worried about my best wrestler at 141. He like to eat and not cut weight.

I guess how you lose weight is purly a matter of preference. Most althletes are totally opposed to losing "water" weight so they tank on water and try not to eat a whole lot. Then they lose 10-20 pounds and they think its because of thier diet. This isn't neccasrily true. Normally what happens is a wrestler ballons up after a season or during the off season becuase they eat so much. With just a little excercise your body achives sort of an equilibrium. The other approach which worked better for me was crashing the water. This works best for people who have very little body fat and not a lot of weight to lose whic hwas my case in high school. No matter how hard I tried I could not get below 168 becuase there was no more fat to lose. So I ate about 1000-1500 calories a day, mostly salads, crackers, that sort of stuff. But I drank hardly any liquids during the day. Before and after practice was the only time and maybe a small glass at night. Some people can't handle this so its best they go a different way. This method is definatly the best for quick weight losss (3-8) pounds a day. I think both work and I don't have a problem with either one. I am somewhat fortunate that I don't really have to deal with weight loss with my kids!

It's all about metabolism. You need to train your body to process large amounts of water and you need to keep your metabolism running in high gear. Shutting off food intake is the worst thing you can do to your metabolism; it slows it to almost a stop and then even a slight amount of food is stored by the body for future use.
Increased body mass (larger muscles) will speed up the metabolic rate and thus the amount of calories burned even while you are resting.
Drinking large volumes of water is also good for weight cutting. Your body gets used to processing the water weight and then 12 hours before weighins when you stop water intake, your body will continue to process the same amount of fluids.
Joe has used this method for years and he can lose 8-12 pounds in the final 24 hours. He usually loses up to four pounds starting about two hours before weighins. This ensures that most of the weight loss is water weight and the recovery time is shorter with the least amount of stress placed on the body.
