I was trying to figure out how many points I had left to wrestle with this year. Does somebody know how they give out the points. Like: 1 for a duel and ???? for a tournament.
And how many teams must be competing for it to be considered a tournament.

That is correct. Added all together a wrestler can have a combined 30 competition points, which includes the league tournament if your league has one. The regional tournament does not count toward this number.

What's the point of limiting how many times a wrestler can wrestle in a year?

The main point in limiting the number of competition points??? Well, you can start with the big, bad KSHSAA...All states do it, however the KSHSAA is one of the worst when it comes to limiting activities, not just wrestling...

Look at other neighboring states, such as Missouri, and compare the records of teams or individuals when the respective seasons are completed...

For example, wrestlers in Missouri typically have over 40 matches under their belt when they hit the post-season...Kansas wrestlers are lucky to have around, or just over 30 matches entering the post-season...

Just listening to some of the records of the finalist in Hays, Shawnee Heights had wrestlers with over 30 matches already. So how can the state say they are limiting kids to the number of matches? Gardner was 31-0, Crosson was 27-6 and i forget Hart's record.

The thing that needs to be kept in mind is that in many states — Missouri and Iowa for example — the norm for regular season tournaments has become dual, rather than bracketed tournaments. Many times in a bracketed tournament, the top seed might only wrestle twice. At a six-team duals tournament everyone wrestles five times.

The funny thing is that the KSHSAA points system does not prohibit or restrict duals tournaments. A one-day tournament is a one-day tournament whether its duals or not. We have a limit in Kansas of 18 dates to get our 30 points. In Iowa they have the same 18-date limit. But the difference is that they have more duals tournaments than bracketed. There's your answer.

Takedown beat me to the punch - he is right. What Gonzo at Heights is doing is exploiting the Kansas rule. If you notice he is only going to tourneys (outside of City) that have five to eight match guarantees for wrestlers - that is how you increase your numbers.

To take is a step further Nixdorf from Blue Springs is 41-0 right now. How you ask? Missouri has a rule that you can go to five tournaments and have 10 duals. Nearly every Missouri tourney is now either duals (such as Iowa and Nebraska) or are pools (1.) two round robin pools and then cross-bracket for placing 1-10; or 2.) Divide the kids into six-man Pool A and Pool B and keep no team scores) to get everyone five matches. Number of matches is more important than "winning" season tournaments. You are slowly seeing these formats creep into Kansas tournaments - How Baldwin is structuring theres is a good example. Just food for thought.

why do they have a limited amount of points in the first place? do they feel its dangerous to wrestle too much or something in one wrestling season?

Thanks for the boost wrestler one, but the only thing I would say is that I disagree with the word "exploit" when you talk about what Gonz is doing at SH.

Round-robin and duals tournaments are the formats we need to look at going to — all of us. The object is to get as many matches for our kids as possible, isn't it? A one-day duals or round-robin tournament that can guarantee five matches as opposed to a bracketed tournament that might only get us two is a no-brainer.

And the KSHSAA rule is not being exploited with duals or round-robin tournaments. It's just good utilization of the rules the way they're written. Bravo Gonz — keep up the good work and keep setting the example.

Touche. It is tough posting witty vernacular and watching CSI Coach. My point was a recognition of the necessity that coaches/ADs have to go thru in Kansas to squeeze the most matches out of the restrictions placed upon you. They are having the same discussion on other boards with the game/tournament limits on Basketball, Softball, etc. Who was attempting to be complimentary. Who failed. Third Base.

No harm, no foul. I didn't mean to make it sound like a scolding. We're all on the same page here, and that's the important part. The state is letting us do this, it's just up to us to do it.

For discussion's sake:

Is there significant purpose to current dual match system? I don't see why teams shouldn't drop dual formats and adopt dual-tourney, pools, etc.

Advantages:
- Increases the number of matches wrestled dramatically
- Offers your kids greater experience
- Potential to raise more revenue
- Increases kids' motivation (having a 'shiney' around your neck with a pretty cheerleader smiling at you is a great way to end a Saturday)
- Great way to 'prep' wrestlers for Regional and State events
- Allows JV and below more matches.

Disadvantages:
- Imposes league tournament to determine league championsip (if warranted),
- For some schools wrestling is THE premier winter sport and the loss of home/away duals may not go over well with home crowd.
- Costlier in transportation and (potentially) overnight costs

Not only are there more dual tournaments, but two-day tournaments are becoming more popular. There is a two-day tournament almost every weekend throughout the season. Two-day tournaments are 4 competition points. However, a wrestler can get anywhere between 2-10 matches in the two days.
