I pretty much agree with WSEWC, except that I would reverse the #1 and #2 positions, as Mehringer's accomplishment is not accompanied by the extreme list of later accomplishments. It is very easy to become biased by discounting the abilities of those who are long gone, but I believe that it is a mistake to rate wrestlers such as Mr. Roberson, Akin, or Douglas above some of the proven past masters of the sport just because you never saw them wrestle or because of what they were able to accomplish at World or US levels. The fact is that Mr. Roderick is largely responsible for the creation of the US Wrestling Federation, and as its first coach, delivered it to the level that it is today. That later gave way to the USA wrestling venue that we have today, but before Mr. Roderick, an American was bucking a stacked deck in the international scene, Mr. Mehringer being a notable exception. One thing I am curious about-- does anyone have a link to the Olympic records to see how many opponents were entered in Mr. Mehringer's bracket? jsut curious.
