Coaches, I had a wrestler become a third generation State Placer from the same school. I know that their must be other schools that have had this happen. So coaches get to work and look up the records. They must be from the same family and all won medals for the same school.

Norton's Three Generations of State Placers:

Bob Madden 4th 103 lbs. 1942 (Grandpa)
Barry Madden 1st 123 lbs. 1970 (Dad)
Clay Madden 1st 103 lbs. 2003 (Son)

Congrats to the Madden family. That is an impressive stat. Did Barry wrestle for KSU before the program was dropped? I think St. Francis should have a third generation in the Keller family. Ed,Tom,Jim. Ed was a conference champ at KSU, before my time. Tom was a state champ and wrestled at KSU and Jim was a state finalist. I don't know about Ed in high school. Sainty, please help!!!

Barry did wrestle at KSU, but has not shared that many "war" stories about his days there. I do know that he was there at the same time as former Ark City Coach Jackson and Oakley coach Samuelson.

Bill I think there were three Generations of Hackneys that were all state champions for Norton. I am almost sure they are all related. Ask one of those old codgers up there I am sure they will all know. I bet they were though.

Overtime, Ralph Hackney was the only state champ in the Hackney family. His dad went to school in Oberlin. Ralph's son Troy went to school in Hays and didn't wrestle. Troy played football and basketball at Hays High and football at KSU

The Carroll family also had several father son state placers, but none from the same school.
Chuck was a state Champion for Norton, his son was a 2 x state champion for KMC in Wichita.
And I believe Tim's son was a placer winner for Colorado just a couple of years ago.

I will go do some checking but there were several hackneys that were state champions and I still think they were related but I might be wrong about that. You are probably right about them being from different schools though.

Elmer Hackney 2X Champ 1934-5 Oblerlin, Gerald Hackney, 2X Oberlin 1943-4, Ralph Hackney Norton, 1970, and I think, Billy help me out here with your records, but I think Jerry Hackney was 2nd or 3rd in the 60's for Norton but I may be in error there. I bet those guys were all closely related there are not that many Hackney's around for them not to be. I thought that Gerald was Ralphs dad or uncle but not sure.

Westfahl, Here we go again on old time wrestling. Bill, Jerry, Ralph and Charlie Hackney all wrestled at Norton in the 60's and 70's. Their dad was Gerald who wrestled at Oberlin. Ralph was the only state champ but I'm sure Charlie and Jerry placed. I'm not sure about Bill.
Randy, Coach Johnson wanted the same family from the same school.
See ya!!

Thanks for the interest. I found all of the Hackney's that placed, but I can't find Jerry placing at state.

I would like to hear from St. Francis, Oberlin and other teams that have been wrestling since the 1930's. Surely there must be other 3 generation placers even if they did not attend the same high school that would be ineresting.

Westfahl, After I posted the above, I read it over and it sounded like I'm trying to be a wise guy. I'm sorry that was not my intention. I think this Madden feat may be special. I can only think of the Kellers from St. Francis and I don't know if Ed Keller was a state placer. I don't even know if they had a state tournment when he wrestled. I know Ed was a conference champ at KSU, his son Tom was a state champ. Tom had a son, I think his name is Jim. I'm sure Jim placed in the state. It's the only family I can think of a the time. I'm sorry about the post above.

Fan67, thats ok you can be wise if you want to no big deal lol. I am a big boy. I got that info out of the Kansas State Wrestling Tourney records and they were in fact state champs in those years. Don't worry about what you post, I am not too serious about being wrong I have made a lifetime work of it lol. No problem. Do you know about the Cooks from Sainty? Placers are hard to find, champs pretty easy. I know there were several brothers and it seemed like somebody told me, maybe Bob Brown (but he told me so many things) that there were Cooks earlier that were in the mix. Also the Bandels but not sure about them. Yeah I think it is special too and pretty interesting.

Hi folks this is Mark Keller. You are wrong about the Kellers. Uncle Ed never was a State placer. He wrestled before they had State Tourneys. He did win the first match in St Francis history. Two of his younger brothers were state champions.
I will check and see I can find any three genetation placers. I know of 1 third generation state qualifier . Gabe Gienger 2003. Kelly Gienger state Champ. 1978. Gabe's Grand father Warren Gienger was also a state champ. Also his other Grandfather Elton Keller was a state Champion.

Hi Mark, wow the first win in the history of St. Francis wrestling. That is a heck of a deal. Bet he didn't have any idea what he started there did he. What a name to be the first one with all the great Kellers that wrestled there. What is Donnie doing now?

I think that is the Don I am talking about. He was the head wrestling coach at Ulysses for a while if that was him then that is the guy.

Mark Keller, Thanks for the info on the Gienger family. Also thanks for mentioning the history of Ed Keller and his family. I read an article once on the Keller family and all the state champs and placers in that family. I didn't realize the Gienger family and the Keller family had family ties. Thanks again.
Hey Westfahl, Do you remember watching Kelly Gienger and Rory Cahoj warm up. They worked harder than most kids do in a match. It was worth the price of admission to watch them warm up.

Funny you should mention those two. When I was at Caney we were kind of in the beginning stages of the program there and we went to state that year and I took most of the varsity. I made them sit and watch those two warm up just to show them what it was supposed to look like. I loved watching those two kids wrestle. They were really great and so smooth at everything they did. Really two of the best kids I have seen and yes their warmups were special. They did know how to focus didnt they.

I looked last night Sainty did not have any 3 gen. state placers. I wondered about the Duells from Goodland and Burlington Co. I know Doug was a four time champ., and his boys were Co. placers, and his dad Ben was coach at Burlington for years. I am not sure if he was a state placer.

Fan67 If you think watching Kelly and Rory warm up was something. You should have seen them in practice they tried to kill each other. I think Rory may still be the only undefeated Jr. College Nat. Champ. . Fun to remember those days.
