A freshman from Columbus at 130 pounds, CJ Napier takes his turn. Napier is in deep but can't secure the score. It is scoreless entering the second. Napier is down. CJ earns his feet with ease. Napier in deep again but this time he scores. CJ works the tilt (visions of Ely) and gains a 2-pt near fall. In the 3rd, the Showme opts neutral and scores the takedown. The Showme has the cradle locked up and is on his back as the period ends. It's overtime ... it's CJ with the takedown and the Championship!

At 135 we have Kyle Detmer representing the freshman class from Kansas taking on a foe the Missouri. The first period ends with no score. Detmer earns the escape but the Showme scores the takedown. The third begins with Detmer trailing 1-2 and taking his turn on top. He gives and escape early. The Showme scores again with the takedown. A late escape by Detmer is of no consequence as Detmer suffers the loss, 2-5.

At 152-pounds, Boaz Beard faces a foe from Pennsylvania. Boaz scores early with a sweet duck under. After an escape they're back to their feet. Again the duck for the score an escape and another takedown and Beard is ahead 6-2 and fives the escape as the first period closes.
Beard is on bottom earns the locked hands point and the reversal. After the escape, it's Beard with the front headlock and the reverse chin for a 2 plus 3 then 3 more. I'm not sure if it all adds up but the score is 17-5 as the period closes.
The third starts in neutral, Boaz gives up a takedown but escapes as the period ends. Boaz Beard is our Champion at 152, winning 18-7.

It's Romero Cotton's turn as the sophomore weighs in at 160. Also we have Jameon Rush representing the Juniors.
Romero scores the takedown and controls the balance of the period. Romero goes on to dominate his foe winning 18-4. Romero Cotton is a watch winner!
Jameon Rush trails early. He is behind 4-7 and goes on to lose the match.
I apologize to Jameon as I was late to recognize he was on the mat!

At 215-pounds in the Senior division we have Jarrett Edison representing Team Kansas against a competitor from Iowa.
The Hawkeye scores the early takedown and ride outs the period. Edison opts down. Edison earns the escape. We enter the 3rd period with Jarrett trailing 1-2. Jarrett is trying for the tilt allows the escape with 10 seconds to go but quickly is in on the legs to tie the score.
I overtime, Edison counters the head-and-arm and gains the takedown. What time is it? Ask Jarrett to check his new watch!

At 215-pounds we have Steven Foster representing the Kansas junior class. He is facing a foe from Illinois.
Foster is warned for backing up. We have blood time.
This gives me a chance to mention the two Champs that Kansas has already crowned. Dante Rogers and Xavier Louis.
Foster is in deep but can't score.
In the second, Foster is given the escape and takes the first lead in the bout. Foster gives up a stall point to tie the score.
Foster gives the escape to start the 3rd. A double stall warning gives the Illini another point. The score is now 1-3. Illini stalls again but too little too late. Foster loses 2-3.

At heavyweight in the sophomore class we have Kansas versus Kansas. Duane Zlatnik versus Stephen Andrus. Rossville versus Manhattan.
Both wrestlers were warned for stalling about a minute-and-a-half into this match. The second period begins with Andrus opting down. Andrus earns the escape. Zlatnik is warned for stalling again and loses a point.
Zlatnik is allowed the escape by Andrus. Zlatnik tries the throw but Andrus counters. Andrus gives up a stall point and a escape. The score is 4-3 Andrus. One minute left in the bout.

A good event ... Kansas did well ... but we must admit, not every team brings 148 competitors! Regardless, that's not our fault, we wrestle those that show up. Now bring on the wrestling season.
That's it from Omaha ... I'll be back in Ottawa in about 4 hours!
