Congratulations to Justin Stirling of Spring Hill. He won the 145 pound bracket by pinning Stevens of Junction City and then beating Travis Eden of Sante Fe Trails in the finals. The bracket included other tough wrestlers in Eric Harris of Paola, Brian Simpson of Columbus, and a real tough kid from Garden City..i think his name was Jacob Waller....not sure on the name. Stirling was ranked 5th in the tournament and turned a lot of heads by coming out victorious. Way to go.

Yeah, Harris is pretty tough to beat. He should get even better as the season progresses.

103 DeVoe Columbus looked as good as billed. Not certain on the depth of this class as compared to some others.
112 Briggs GC looked good but I was very impressed with Bell BL who was out until semester. He is for real.
119 Tanner is all world and rightfully so but I thought Smith Chapman wrestled him really tough. Better than the score looks. I was surprised by Sharp FS. He looks like a high state placer.
125 Gregory, Glenwood Iowa was very dominant.
130 was a very tough weight with a lot of great wrestlers and several close matches decided in the final seconds. Look for 8 or ten state placers here. Bowman is tough.
135 Oswald ACCHS dominated the field.
140 another really tough weight that will place 10 kids at state. Oliphant Paola, Schmale Santa Fe and Zahm Columbus never placed. It was tough. Allison looked great.
145 Stirling had a great tournament. I think he surprised people. Eden of Santa Fe is one of four soph on their team that are very impressive.
152 Wiscombe SFT and Buck BL a double OT match. Buck took down and needed another 5 seconds. A really great match, low scoring but very intense.
160 Awesome performance by Hart of Sh Hts. In my mind he had the most outstanding performance in the tournament. That kid is great on TDs and just keeps coming. It is a good thing the match didn't last any longer. Lattimore was about out of blood time. They would have had to tape both eyes shut. This weight class was very tough. It will have lots of state placers. Some very high ranked kids did not place.
171. I understand why Baylor was the OW with 4 state champions and some runner-ups in the field. 11 or 12 kids that will place at state. The match with Payne obviously could have gone either way quite easily.
189 Lyons was impressive especially on TDs. I that the big match was with MCGovern LFS and Monk Blue Valley. I was but should not have been by McGoverns win. Another very deep class.
215 Having watched Fradin in prior years I was shocked to see Paxton over power him physically.
275 They sure grow them big (not fat)I remember seeing Venegas last year and being impressed. I saw him walking around in his bib overalls and didn't think much of him, until he stripped down to his uniform. He is all MAN. He doesn't do anthing special but he is a specimen. The KC area has some really well built kids. Garden City was dominating because of numbers not because there kids are better. They had only one champion but lots of placers. I though early in the year that Fort Scott would contend for a state title and then backed off when I heard Cagle was gone. They will contend for the title without Cagle.

Hart vs. Lattimer was a good one. Lots of action and brutal. Lattimer got cut and still didn't slow down. Hart seemed pumped up for the match and real quick on his feet. Lattimer got deep on 2 or 3 shots but Hart fought them off with no score. 160 turned out to be a tougher bracket at Basehor than thought with Lappin getting 3rd, Glessner 4th, and Figge not even placing.

How did Eden do all the wrestling if he lost so soundly? I sure remember a well executed (Justin Stirling) kelly role in the first that was close to leading to back points.

What do you think the outcome would be if Tanner Gardner wrestled Gregory from Glenwood, Iowa? I still remember Gregory growling as he slammed his garden city kid to his back in the finals.

I wouldn't say the Gardner/Smith finals match was closer than the score. It was 12-2, Gardner took him down 5 times and put him on his back once. Smith scored his 2 points when Gardner cut him. It seemed Smith was out there only to keep the match close. He tried his best, and still got dominated.
