Barring any upset, Matt Gilliland (don't know if spelling is right) will win his fourth state title. Which is a huge acomplishment. But does he match up with the first 4 time state champ in Bill Gabel from Sainty

I thought the first 4 timer was Duell from Goodland. How many have there been? Who was actually first?

I would agree that Matt Gilliland will win his fourth state championship, but watching Bill Gabel wrestle was amazing. He has so much knowledge on the sport and executes in match situations, so I would have to say that Gabel was better.

Duell was a four time 4A state champ. Billy Gable was the first 321A four time state champ.

Gilliland's knowledge of the sport is as good or better than anyone I have ever met. Gable was amazing to watch as well. Its tough to measure past wrestlers against present wrestlers, because they never wrestle each other or common opponets. Mat G. will win his fourth state championship and I'll be there to support him and the rest of the Hoxie wrestlers.

I 've had the privilege of seeing both. Gable would be my choice, because he knew every move and countermove in the book. But it would be extremely close probably 3-2

MR. SALYER,

You are technically correct;

In the early/mid-70's the classification system in Kansas has gone through several changes; for example, in 1967 Garden City won the 2A state basketball
championship--which was the Kansas big school classification at that time (there were B classifications at that time). In 1971 GC won their first state wrestling championship which was 4A--the big school classification at that time. In the late 70's or very early 80's the KSHSAA reshuffled the A's to our current system of utilizing all A's and no B's.

Therefore, Billy Gable was the FIRST four time state champion in the 321A division.

It is true that Goodland was 3A in Doug Duell's champion years, but 3A at that time would he equivalent to today's 4A and smaller 5A schools.

Just some history--they were both OUTSTANDING WRESTLERS!!!

KMC was also 3A when Oeser won his 4 titles. Beloit was 3A when Treaster won the first three of his 4 titles. In my opinion Gable is a cut above Gilliland. I would take Oeser over all of the others.

I don't think that the match would be something like 3-2. Gable would rack up more points than that, and probably in a hurry. I agree with fanatic, he is a cut above, maybe 2.

Harlow can U go?

Oeser Definitely takes the pie for all of these characters, But are they better than Zach Roberson

Oeser is virtually unique in that he was able to produce as a champion as a freshman and sophomore at such heavy weights, I can't think of any other examples of really big 4 timers. Roy was not able to repeat those performances at the college level, as some others since have been able to. No one will probably ever be able to match Myron Roderick's record of 3 ncaa championships, a bronze olympic medal, and several (over ten) ncaa team championships as a coach. He also coached at least two olympic teams, and helped originate the u.s wrestling federation, that is USA wrestling today. He was the first inductee of the wrestling hall of fame, and was the president of it until recently, if he isn't still. He also originated the OSU wrestling camps that are so popular today under the directorship of John Smith, but he was the first guy to do more things than probably any other amatuer wrestler in the U.S., and I think he has to be the best kansas wrestler so far. (Have ANY other Ks. wrestlers won even one ncaa title)

The thing about Oeser was I really think somebody should check his DNA. Compared to other high school kids I think he was part something other than human. He definitely was an animal, I just don't know which species to compare him with.
