I would like to know everyones official school policy on practice on days that school is dismissed because of weather. If you do not know the official policy of your school you may voice an opinion on this topic.

At the school I teach at the policy is that coaches can have practice, but cannot make attendance mandatory. It is always "if you can make it".

In Topeka 501 the rule is that if school is dismissed then we can not have practice or have any games (wrestling tournaments).

At ours, it's up to the coach. And like what whest177 said, it can not be mandatory, only "if you can make it" basis. But I know out AD has his own rule, that if the roads are icy, that we have to be out by like 4:30 (I think is what I heard) that way we have time to get home b4 the roads freeze back up.

In St. Francis, practice is always at 10:00 am when school is cancelled, but only if you dont have to risk your life to try and make it.

in shawnee mission, you have can't have practice before 11:00 on snow days and the district AD can cancel all activities as needed.
coaches should let their kids be aware of this rule so they don't have to spend time calling around the morning of.

At Shawnee Heights, Coach Gonzales would volunteer to go pick up any wrestlers who could not make it to a practice on a snow day. In a way, that kind of sucked because if you just didn't feel like practicing, you couldn't use the excuse that you couldn't get to school because of the roads.

At our school you can have practice on a snow day if approved. This week the superintendent cancelled all after school activities so we could not practice, but unless otherwise stated we can have "voluntary" practice.

We are allowed to practice at Colby if school is cancelled. A few years ago, I think we had a policy that prohibited this, but our AD and coaches appealed to the board and got this policy changed. If conditions are bad enough the administration can say no practice, but otherwise we have "non-mandatory practices" on snow days.

Beloit's policy states that if school is dismissed because of weather, then all activities involving students or the community are prohibited. While in principle this is logical because if the weather is too bad to attend school, it's too bad to come to practice. But because the weather in Kansas can change in a matter of seconds, there could be situations where school is called off because of the weather and later in the day it could be safe to drive. There should be an allowance for the administration or coaches to make this decision. I do believe that if this happens, it should be an informal practice where it is left to the individual to decide whether or not it is safe to come to practice.

Wichita Schools never cancel! We will come to school when there are 15 inches of snow and 4 inches of ice. hahaha! We were here the day after the superbowl when we had the worst winter day of the year.
However, we were told on Wed. that we could not have practice on Wed. night and had to be out of the buildings by 3:20. The worst part was that we had to weigh in on Thursday for a dual without practice the night before. Our 103 pounder didnt even come close.

I don't see anything wrong with Beloits bad weather policy. School's obvious primary purpose is education not extra curricular activities, therefore practice should not be mandatory if school is called off. No school, the weather clears, the roads are passable then practice should be either no practice or voluntary. After all there are certain liabilities that fall back on the School District,SchoolBoard,AD,and Coaches should practice be made mandtory.

On snow days, Junction City High School holds a "jockstraps only" practice in a vat of banana peels.
Congrats, Aquinas! Great job, Hat Town! Salyer Rules!

I know a lot of school boards frown upon coaches having practices if school is cancelled, but I don't see a problem with having non mandatory, sometimes it will allow for teaching better technique to some individuals as the #s will be down on a bad weather day.
As for the Coach Gonzales thing, that's hilarious...I actually kind of like that driving around to get people for practice thing.
What was that I just read about JC and bananas? Is that an anti JC post...lol, funny stuff though.

Its amazing how many city league schools had kids that made weight with the problem that Church pointed out. Makes ya kinda wonder, doesn't it... How many other schools had problems with kids missing weight on Thursday due to no practice on Wednesday?
